Hello all!

is there a list of the ATS Vocabulary somewhere on the net? I have a hard copy, but I'm being a lazy so and so and don't want to have to re-type the whole thing in for one of my students.

I have it in a Word documment if you message me your email address. I know I'm missing a few of the new GC ones, but I guess they are not officially on the menu yet. :)

Not to be greedy, but would you mind sending me one as well? I'm new to tribal, and having a list of ATS moves would be a tremendous resource for me...in fact, I wish you could just host your list online somewhere. I'm sure lots of people would find it useful.

The link that Ottavina sent is great, but it would be cool if that list were perhaps in the ATSFaq tribe for reference as well.

A friend of mine is compiling a bellydance dictionary online (you can find it at www.thesoulstudio.net), and she hopes to have ATS movements there eventually. Just something to look for!

            Thanks for the plug, Alex!

Also, if someone would have interest in sending me the ATS Movement Name List, I'd be happy to add it to The Bellydance Dictionary. Down the road, it could include descriptions and demonstrations as well.

The dictionary is great. With the confusion by some regarding ATS moves (I am not confused), I hope there is a distinction in the descriptions regarding ATS, ITS and SGI moves. jms

                I'm glad you're not confused, Joan. ;)

Did you look at the dictionary? Under "Group Improv"-- because that's what ATS is-- the placeholder says, "Stay tuned for Group Improv descriptions and instructions based on the tribal styling of Fat Chance Belly Dance (ATS), Black Sheep BellyDance, and Gypsy Caravan." So all major styles of improv will be represented. It will still be complicated because there is name overlap between styles (i.e., there are multiple versions of the Egyptian with subtle, or sometimes not-so-subtle, differences). It will be up to the owner of the dictionary to decide how she labels these styles (ATS/ITS/SGI/CGI/NCIS). Nice work so far, Nayana!

I agree with Sandi, further down-- is there a great ATS quiz at the end of this? Do I need to be making flash cards for myself? Actually, for my own purposes, I do have a set of cards with all the moves my troupe does, with different cards for the big variations (i.e. Arabic and Arabic flat-ball-ball-ball are different cards, but Arabic Turning In Place is not). Not sure what other people need the list for, but I use mine to make sure I'm drilling all the moves, and to work on chaining together moves that my brain might not otherwise connect.

I don't think there is one right answer for everyone. You do what works for you. If an idea fits, use it. If it doesn't (or just seems silly to you) then don't use it. Quite simple, really. :)

The snarky questioning of other people's methods seems unnecessary.

I agree, Jaki. Everyone should do what works for them in their situation. The quiz thing I just find funny.

Or, you could even just go to the catalog and find the list of moves in each video. You'd pretty much have a complete list. They're also on the back cover of each dvd.

The back of the DVD's do not list everthing on the DVD. DVD 4 does not list the moves covered in the layering section. There are also many variations that are not listed anywhere. I do have the copy of the moves from GS, but there some variations that are missing from that as well.

          Well, variations are just that. Variations on moves. So the list of the moves are there, but the variations are not considered "moves" necessarily. They are just...variations! :}

Just so everyone knows, there is no big list floating around FC with every single move and variation on it. We create variations all the time. The list would be endless. What we have in our brains (or my brain - I should speak for myself) is a catalog of the families of movements, the specific movements and the possible variations with those movements. If someone does an Arabic, my brain goes to all the variations that I know could happen with it. It could pivot around, move forward, back, hold in place with arm flourishes. It could move into an Arabic Hiptwist or Drop Drop Drop or an Orbit if you're in a duet. And from those moves, come other variations (on some). I don't think we've even exhausted all the possibilities on how each move can vary.

Why does everyone need a list? Is there a quiz?

Not necessarily the list itself, but I do use flashcards in class quite a bit (and the list helped me to create the cards). On the cards, I list all of the general vocabulary of movements. I don't separate pivoting and moving forward or back or anything like that. When we play the "Flashcard game", I have the students free dancing as if they are each leading an invisible group of dancers. During the song, I hold up one of the cards and have them trasition into and drill that move, and it's variations, until I hold up another card.

For example, I have written on one of the cards "Single Bumps". The students can then choose stationary, pivoting, traveling, or 1/2 turning this move. This type of drill helps with widening their vocabulary of movement options as well as smoothing out transitions between moves.

The students actually requested that I make this list, so that they could make their own flashcards for practicing at home. Yay students! :-D

We do similar-- we have a large poster in our studio that lists all our moves, broken down by class level. The list allows people to remember moves that aren't lead often, or that they themselves need to work on leading. It also helps more advanced students to see where other, more beginner students are in their vocab-- so if a level 3 dancer finds herself surrounded by level 1 dancers, they know what they can cue that the level 1s can follow. It also shows which moves are not from the Fat Chance format, so if someone wonders where a move came from, they can just check the list.

I like the "Flashcard Game!" That sounds fun, and challenging. We were thinking of doing a similar one, where you are given (or randomly chose) one move, and then do as many variations as you can think of-- traveling, levels, etc. I was extra inspired by this idea after I saw a troupe doing an entire piece with only a move or two-- I think they used the Arabic?-- but they did every variation you could think of, and it looked fantastic. Things don't have to be complicated to be amazing. :D

For those of us not exposed to the movements and variations on a daily/weekly basis like you guys are, a list is a great way to refresh our memories of what we have learned, and formulate the structure of combined movements and variations that we may not think of, see, or generally encounter very often. You're lucky to be in the thick of it, but for those of us who aren't, a list is just a dry recounting of information, but instead can be a really valuable *tool* for learning and expanding our dance expertise from afar!

Do the first turn with the arm sweeping overhead. Then on the reverse turn portion, as the right arm pulls down and the left floats up, you step back to back with your partner, then kind of "curl" around them over your shoulder (this part is incredibly hard to describe, but then again,it was hard to parse in person, too), then finish the turn moving into place, having switched places.
Whew! Someone please do better than I did!

No, it's cool, Val. If y'all want to write up a list, go for it! Not saying you can't or shouldn't! I'm just saying that there are moves and there are variations.

Hey, it's not like I've never been where you're all at. As a student, I also attempted to write a list out of the moves. I actually created a spreadsheet and wrote out the words that I could remember Carolena saying in class. But little did I realize how much there was and how much I was taking myself out of my body to create this list. I decided to just be present in the classroom and drill. YMMV.

And I know, as teachers, a list is a helpful tool. I refer to our L1/L2 format list in class all the time. But the variations are like little bunnies running around the main moves. They can multiply and get away from you, if you don't know what the guidelines are on why some variations work or don't work. So, I feel it is easier to take one step at a time. Really get to know each one and it's potentials and how they flow with other moves. I also sometimes use the students to see if a variation would work. Can we move it forward and back? If so, why? If not, why? Does it look good? If so, if not, why? Etc. Just sayin', ATS isn't all planned out like you want it to be. The formula is there, but you can do the math too! :D

              Anyhoo, list away, people!

Just re-reading this thread today, and diggin' on this SandiSpeak. I try to explain to people why ATS sang out to me so strongly after I took my General Skills. And it was because of this phenomenon. It seems like there are all these "rules" that determine what you can and can't do, but instead there are guides kind of built into the system via the moves themselves, which give you tools to work with in the moment organically, rather than having to memorize a pile of can's and can't's.

Oh course, Sandi said it in two short sentences. ;)

I also want to remind people... before you try to learn all the variations, get good at the basics first. Just because you've taken the bodywave class already, doesn't mean you know it and it is in your body. Really get to know each base move before moving away and/or adding to it.

Oooh, thank you Durrah! I have a notebook for all my ATS notes and info, and in the front of it I have a post-it note reminder (that has been there longer than I'd care to admit) that I want to have several lists of the moves - just alphabetical, by family, alphabetical but split by slow/fast, by class level, by which DVD they are on (that one's easy!) and maybe one or two more. I think your family list might be the inspiration for me to get working on it! Thanks for sharing it. :)

I have always fantasized about putting the moves on a huge piece of paper, then putting some music on and throwing darts at the moves during class for the students to transition to. Like pin the move on the leader.

"Pin the move on the leader" --what a fantastic idea! Seriously, as a student (at the appropriate learning level, of course) I would LOVE something like that. It would force thinking more quickly (in the case of, "whoops, the leader before me just pulled out the combo I wanted to do") and also force homework ("wait, what? Is that what that move's called? I don't even remember learning that!") between classes.

Of course I say that now, and my teacher's going to see this post and pull out her version of this game when I least expect it...
