It just occurred to me today that FCBD doesn't seem to be wearing the turban as part of the standard costume anymore--now I see flowers, head scarves, mung tikka, and other jewelry. Everything still looks lovely, but I'm just wondering when y'all decided to let go of the turban?

Wed, August 12, 2009 - 8:48 AM"Everything evolves" ...
... indeed it does.
Personally, I love the old look, and the new look. I love the turban because, for me, it symbolizes the rich, cultural 'base' embedded in ATS. And I like the newer look of headbands, scarves, flowers, etc, because I feel it gives ATS dancers a very earthy-Goddess look. The only reason I don't do a turban, is because it seems to take me forever to get one on, and then, it winds up containing so much heat and sweat when I dance, that it becomes heavy and really uncomfortable. But when the cooler weather comes here to Buffalo, we plan to wear turbans for some of our performances. They're fun as all heck to create :)

Re: A Costume Question
Tue, August 11, 2009 - 8:56 AMWell, Carolena gave our podcast (www.yippodcast.com) an interview when she was down in Florida a little while ago. She mentioned to us that she used to be all about spending 2 hours getting into costume, but that she couldn't get enthusiastic about that much time to get dressed anymore. (I'm paraphrasing, of course.)
I'm not sure, actually, if her comments on this specifically made it into the podcast, but I remember her mentioning it! :-) -

Re: A Costume Question
Tue, August 11, 2009 - 9:28 PMIt's funny, for me a turban is pretty simple, but fighting with may hair takes forever! I can't wait until I figure out a few quick style that work without a lot of fuss. -

Re: A Costume Question
Wed, August 12, 2009 - 11:17 AMIt's just been an evolution. We did dance at Rakkassah one year without headwraps, and from there, here and there we'd decide to do gigs without them, and pretty soon that's what we were doing all of the time. The headwraps are hot, do get uncomfortable, and do take a lot of time to put on and get right.
Once I got my hairstyle down, it's been MUCH easier than a headwrap. Also, just a personal preference for me, but I like the way I look with some hair framing my face, as opposed to how I look in the headwrap. -

Re: A Costume Question
Wed, August 12, 2009 - 3:17 PMOn a related note, how do y'all feel about mixing headstyles within a troupe performance? One of my dancemates wears her hair pulled back in a tight bun, decorating the bun with scarves and flowers. It looks great on her but it's a look I can't pull off. I feel most comfortable in a turban, especially now that I've got short hair. Another troupemate prefers a half turban with hair hanging down the back. I wonder whether the variety looks messy. -

Re: A Costume Question
Wed, August 12, 2009 - 3:56 PMI think the term.... "SameSame but Different" applies.
As long as your head glam is balanced with all your body glam then it will look good.
I miss the turbans sometimes. It didn't matter if my hair was clean, dirty, brushed, knotted under that thing, I still looked fabulous! Haha.
With the exposed hair, I have to make sure I don't wash it for a couple days prior so that it will do what I want when putting it 'up'. I always summon the power of Wendy and her magic fingers when I attempt doing ANYTHING with my hair. haha

Re: A Costume Question
Wed, August 12, 2009 - 4:01 PMI think it's fine if you have that variety, although, we've always preferred that the hair be pulled up and not hanging down, unless in braids. We don't use the sensuality of loose hair in our dance and pulling it up keeps it out of the way of obstructing cues and the movements.
Btw, Wendy, I've always thought you looked great in a headwrap. You do good headwrap, grrl! I think most people can look good in a headwrap, just have to find the right shape to frame the face. -

Re: A Costume Question
Wed, August 12, 2009 - 4:22 PMThanks, Sandi. *blush*
It's been so long since I've done a headwrap, I don't know how well I could do one now! -

Re: A Costume Question
Wed, August 12, 2009 - 5:42 PMThanks Sandi for the response to the mixed hat question. I was going to ask the exact same thing.
I can make protein fibers (i.e. animal hair) do really, really cool things with my fingers, thread, steam, and pressure. But only when it's woven for me - I just can't stand playing with my hair! :-)

Re: A Costume Question
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 4:26 PMI've seen a pic of Wendy in a turban and what stood out for me was that it made me stare at her eyes that much more.
I'm intrigued by the whole 2 hours to put a turban on, because it only takes me 7 minutes from start to finish. The turban helps me because it keeps sweat from rolling down into my eyes and, of course, there is the whole disguising the snaggly bedhead. :))))
But then, I'm a total fan of the headwrap in ATS. In many ways, it feels like women claiming power by wearing something VERY male in the Arabic world. -

Re: A Costume Question
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 5:00 PMI think the two hours thing comes from putting on the base wrap, and maybe a few interwoven decorative color wraps, then adding the flowers and pendants, etc. There's a lot of turban-puttering that can squander a lot of time.
I like the looks of both. Though I haven't been able to be consistently successful in reproducing neither the turban nor the 1/2 turban/updo thing. Takes more practice, I guess. -

Re: A Costume Question
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 5:14 PMalright you guys have me all curious! I've never worn a turban, but I'm going right home to tie one of those puppies on!!!

Re: A Costume Question
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 5:40 PMIt takes me 2 hours no matter if I'm wearing a headwrap or the updo hair. That's total time with makeup and costume, not just the head/hair. I used to get so ornate with my headwrap, but now when we wear them, I go for the basics. Black base, color/sparkley scarf, a hood ornament and a flower. Maybe something in back too. -
-
Re: A Costume Question
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 6:19 PMYeah, I kinda figured it would be the same amount of time. I need to be more patient. I'm guessing the biggest reason why my success in headwraps and updos varies so greatly is because of my lack of patience. And that bobby pins and I don't always get along. There have been times I've wished for a cork skull, so I could just use a staple gun. But then, un-doing the do would be a real bitch, wouldn't it? -

Re: A Costume Question
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 6:37 PMI never use bobby pins. My hair spits them out. I just use sticks and alligator clips with flowers. Less is better, I am convinced. ;} -
-
Re: A Costume Question
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 8:33 PMMine too! The alligator clips work for me, too. I'll have to experiment. Thanks!

Re: A Costume Question
Fri, August 14, 2009 - 6:42 PMSorry if you know this already, but the reason hair spits out bobbypins is that they're just not designed to hold updos. They're designed to hold bits of hair flat (for the bobs of the 20s), so that's why they don't work well for other things. Hairpins (the v-shaped kind) are best for updos, but a) make sure you get the sturdy kind (there's thin flimsy ones that are completely useless) and b) you have to sort of twist them as you insert. If you just put them straight in they'll slide right out again. I like to insert into the edge of my updo aiming straight at my scalp, then as the pin touches my scalp I change direction and end with the pin parallel to my scalp. -

Re: A Costume Question
Fri, August 14, 2009 - 9:14 PMAnd just as a note folks... if none of you have met my tribemate, Maral, she has LOOooong thick hair down past her knees. If anyone can get hair to stay on her head, this would be the lady.

Re: A Costume Question
Fri, August 21, 2009 - 9:49 PMThere are some "bobby pins" out there that pack a punch. I have very thin, very hard to deal with hair. And I use these to attack my fake hair do-dads and pieces:

These suckers are STRONG, and they do stay. I believe they're by 'Goody'. I get tons of them and horde em' like they're going out of style ;) -

Re: A Costume Question
Sun, August 30, 2009 - 8:56 PMI counted last time I took my hair out for a performance, and it was 30 bobby pins. 30! Keeping my bun in, attaching the fake hair, keeping my headscarf on. I have thin, fine, straight, slick hair. Without something to bulk it up I look unbalanced, and whatever I put on has to be firmly attached, and even scarves slip out if I don't pin them at the back, back sides, sides and one at the top of my head. -
-
Re: A Costume Question
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 12:14 PMI only use bobby pins for my actual hair and to pin down a scarf. I use hairpins (I buy them at the local ballet shop) for fake hair. They work way better and take much fewer pins to do the job.

Re: A Costume Question
Fri, August 14, 2009 - 11:49 AMI love a good turban. We're very lucky in our troupe to have a Turban Ninja (that girl can whip out a fantastic turban in five minutes!) so she does all of ours when we wear them. We do hair gardens most of the time though. Not everyone loves a turban as much as I do ;) -

Re: A Costume Question
Fri, August 14, 2009 - 2:06 PMDurrah, I would love to see a picture of you in a turban!
On another note, I've gotten to where I really, really like wearing a turban. To me, like Valizan noted, they accentuate the eyes. Plus, it doesn't matter if my roots are showing! LOL

Re: A Costume Question
Fri, August 14, 2009 - 3:20 PMI like to have some hair framing my face, too. That's another reason I stray from turbans. I think because, for me, since I have such thin, limp, fragile hair, I feel more empowered being able to adorn it with sticks and flowers, head bands, medallions, etc, and have some of my hair showing here and there, rather than cover it all up.
But for me, more than anything else, is really is about the heat. All I have to do is yawn, and I break a sweat. And when that turban gets sweaty and wet, it makes me feel really, really uncomfortable. So if i had to do a longer performance, that involved a lot of movement and dance, I'd lean more towards the modern, evolved look. Cooler weather, or less dancing, maybe even something outside in the fall or spring? Turban would be just fine.

Re: A Costume Question
Fri, August 21, 2009 - 4:33 PMI've worked with both, turban and hair-ups with my troupe - turban being our preference for the way it portrays a regal look and it's in keeping with the original ats format whereas the hair-up seems to have evolved from fusion - it's good to have the choice. It has never taken me longer than around 10 minutes to complete my turban. I have found I've gotten used to the heat issue - I accept that it's part of the persona. Some of my girls struggled with their turban for quite some time, but after experiencing hair-ups, I made a decision that for performances we'll do turbans - they've now come to love their turbans and call it the "icing on the cake" for completion of our costume. If I had left it up to them to wear whatever they liked, I would have had a mix - turbans and hair-ups ... Sylvia, your query about mixing both mediums - personally I would tend to go with one or the other to create a unified look.

Re: A Costume Question
Fri, August 21, 2009 - 6:15 PMHow do people restrain their hair for under the turban -- my hair is below the shoulders and thick. I've not exactly figured it out as if I put it up in a bun it makes a big lump which makes my head look deformed. LOL -
-
Re: A Costume Question
Sun, August 30, 2009 - 9:04 PMZina, maybe two braids criss-crossed around your head? Or two braids worn hanging down (decorate them) from the turban. I've seen pics of Carolena doing this

Re: A Costume Question
Wed, September 9, 2009 - 4:01 PMWhen I had long hair, I would use the length rolled up in the base scarf, sort of parted in the center back with the turban cloth wrapped around it so the hair was not visible, and then just wrap the turban from there. That way the hair doesn't have any weird lumpy things going on, but it's still out of the way. (Does that make sense?)
-
Re: A Costume Question
Wed, September 9, 2009 - 5:45 PMI very very thick hair and it's longish.
When we wore turbans, I use to
1. Have dirty hair 2-3 unwashed
2. Long bobbie pins (the ones that are V shaped, not the ones that are together)
3. make a very flat bun by pulling up half of the hair, twisting into a flat bun and securing it with bobbie pins. then divide the bottom section of hair that is down into two. take one side up and wrap it flat around the bun pinning as you go. do the same for the other side.

Re: A Costume Question
Tue, August 25, 2009 - 2:10 PMi love a turban .. . but for us here in North Carolina. . .when we dance outside on a HOT, HUMID, 95 degree summer day .. . .turbans just hold all the heat in. we adjust what we wear on our head to suit the weather, lol. -

Re: A Costume Question
Mon, August 31, 2009 - 11:00 PMI am a HUGE fan of the Turban.... My hair is thick and to best describe it its usually a HOT MESS!!! Under the turban, noone knows that I am having a bad hairday and I really feel empowered by it. Plus like several people have noted, including my partner Zina, it really accentuates the eyes. Zina does a great job at mixing the floweres into the turban. I have tried the flowers in my hair and I just don't like the way it looks on me, it makes me look like Im Blooming....not a good look for me ... LOL -
