Hey everyone...
Been meaning to ask this for a while now. So here goes!
I know I'm not the only ATS dancer with short (really short!) hair. So, I was wondering, are any if you using faux hair pieces of any kind? And if so, do you have any recommendations? Suggestions? Testimonials? Etc? I'm in the market for something new, and I've been trying to avoid spending money on things I'll wind up not liking, or not being able to use.
So... are any of you willing to share a bit about what you do, and how you make the 'do' happen?
I was going to post this in the 'hair and make-up for dancers' tribe, but since I'm talking a more traditional 'up-do' ATS style, I thought it would be OK to ask here.
Thanks!!!

Re: Short haired ATS Dancers...
Sun, April 5, 2009 - 9:23 PMMy hair looks like a big flower of its own when I do it spikey, so I often don't wear fake hair at all.
When I do, I have these hair thingies, which I don't know the name of so I can't seem to find an example online. Basically it is a metal hair comb with two lengths of curled and silky hair which are on a hidden bendable wire. You get the comb in and can shape the hair any way you like, and it looks really really real. I get comments on it all the time, and it is soooo easy. Anyone know the name of them? I get them at a mall kiosk, and they have tons of colors to match. To keep the comb in, I just put some little rubber bands onto teensy tiny pony tails, to anchor the hair, and then push the comb into that.
Last night I was talking to Wendy about their fake hair thingies, which seem to be fake hair ratted up into a hair net, so it looks like a giant bun or a pile of dreads, which is attached similarly to the way I attach my comb above--make teensy pony tails, pin the hell out of the bun-extension into the rubber banded bits, then stick all your hair accoutrement into and around and voila! It looks really incredible onstage, and even up close it took a moment to be like, "Waiiiit a minute...you have SHORT hair. What is this?!" ;)
Wendy, didn't you guys recently have a workshop on this at the studio? They really look great! -

Sun, April 5, 2009 - 9:52 PMAnd I've seen Shay's stick-ons listed as "Palm Trees" at a local wig shop, but I don't think that's a common name for 'em.

Mon, April 6, 2009 - 12:11 PMThat's what I do now... tiny ponies, little hair 'buns'. I love the hair net bun look though. LOVE it. I noticed Megha does it, too. I'd love to know more especially since my poor hair is very thin, and very useless on it's own :(

Mon, April 6, 2009 - 8:51 AMI used to have (really) short hair - check out this tribe if you haven't seen it already: tribes.tribe.net/shortbellyhair. They have some good tips. -

Re: Short haired ATS Dancers...
Tue, April 7, 2009 - 2:24 PMI think i've missed a cultural reference....
But i can see how that may be misinterpreted!
It is a real tribe, although the link seems to be broken! Search for it - lots of nice tips for fake hair and stuff to put in short hair.

Re: Short haired ATS Dancers...
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 10:24 AMThere are some YouTube instructional videos on how to tie scarves. The lady doing them has very short hair. I know she's planning on putting more up about how to do hair for ATS.

Re: Short haired ATS Dancers...
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 10:52 AMI was telling Sharon about my hairpiece. In the extras of the Devotion dvd, there's a scene where I talk about it.
I got the idea from this video:
www.youtube.com/watch
I was actually pinning my old dreads in, which weighed a TON, and was extremely uncomfortable, then I saw the above video, and the lightbulb clicked on. -

Wed, April 8, 2009 - 11:12 AMOMG...I love this!!!!!
Not only to give this short girl some height but also volume to her otherwise scrawny amoutn of hair and not kill my head!!!!!!!!!!!!
The ideas are just swimming and after seeing it in action this last Saturday...I am loving it....THANKS for sharing. Sounds like lots of us might be getting taller and fluffier hair yet. :)

Re: Short haired ATS Dancers...
Tue, April 21, 2009 - 8:21 AMDon't forget to bring all your money, too, because there will be a costuming sale going on all day, as well. We're selling our gently used costuming and jewelry in between classes! I know I have some good stuff I'm selling-some Banjara belt bases, a fluffy skirt or two, some kuchi jewelry....

Re: Short haired ATS Dancers...
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 5:14 PMOne word: old-school turbans. ;) All hair issues are instantly eqalized.
Otherwise, I have a big fancy headband with attached flowers and jinglies that I pop on and off. I have also been able to attach lightweight yarn-falls to my 2-inch long hair by making teensy ponies and bobby-pinning them in place. -

Re: Short haired ATS Dancers...
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 10:31 PMI just posted 2 pics in the photos tab of this tribe...just hit me...why not wrap a belt around and tie it (very cleverly and obviously) around your neck or if it would fit back under the belt. I had just bought this mirror belt at our Renn Faire...and apparently, I'm HUMONGOUS, it's all I can do to barely tie a shoestring knot behind my hips...dang it.

Thu, April 9, 2009 - 9:06 AM> One word: old-school turbans
This has been my approach, even though most of the folks I dance with do the buns/flowers thing.
