knee problems and turns

I have 'bad knees'. Won't go into details but I find I put a lot of stress on my knees when doing full turns, like the Sahra turn, wrap around turn, even the egyptian full turn. I find it's better if instead of keeping the left foot planted, I pick it up halfway through the turn, but then I have problems with balance. Any advice?

Hi Imigula, I have knee issues too (many dislocations in my youth). Make sure you are dancing in ballet slippers or shoes with a good "spin" pad on the balls of the feet. Knee problems and bare feet are not a good mix for most. Also, my understanding of most turns is that there is no set foot placement, only guidelines for smoothing out the turn. If you need to take an extra step or two to get around comfortably, you can do that. Just be sure to keep the integrity of the movement intact and as smooth as possible.

As for balance, I find that most students with balance issues when turning have trouble because they are locking out (straightening) their knee or knees causing them to spin off their center. Keep the knees soft and/or slightly bent during turns to help with balance. Be sure engage the pelvic muscles and abs to support your upper body as well. Let us know how it's going :)

thanks. I should have thought of that. I just crocheted myself a pair of half-slipper things for the balls of my feet - completely eliminates the stress on my knees. Great advice!

What a great idea. I was just gonna buy some dance paws or the like. Do you have a pattern or some guidelines to making these? What kind of yarn did you use?

I don't recommend socks or other cloth foot covers for my students because they are TOO slippy. Dance paws and Foot Undeez and the like have some grip, but still have plenty of give. So no falling on your patootie!

I'll try to explain. I'm a beginner at crochet - I only know a few stiches and I don't know how to read a pattern - bear with me.

I used just cheap acrylic yarn - nothing special. I used a 5.00 mm hook.

chain 10, then join the ends with a slip stitch to make a loop. chain 20, then go back about 10 stitches & join with a slip stitch to make another loop, so now you have a length of chain with a loop at both ends. chain another 10 and join at the first loop. so now you basically have a 1 big loop with 2 smaller loops on it. The 2 smaller loops are for the 2nd toe - one on the top of the foot and the other on the sole. I made the loop on the sole a little bigger so that part of the ball of the foot ends up exposed. I made several of these and I found this way works best - that way you still have some gription. So then, you just crochet around until it is as wide as you want it. I crocheted 2 rows - I think it was a 'double crochet'.

Actually you'll crochet slightly less than 2 rows. I wanted to have the 'tie' start at the edge of the top of the foot. I crocheted a chain long enough to wrap around the ankle and then come back and loop through on the other side. So what you basically end up with is sock that just covers the ball of the foot, with 2 loops to go over the 2nd toe, that ties around the ankle. I had to make a few of these to get it right, but they work really good, take maybe 30 minutes to make a pair, and are cheap.

does that make any sense at all?

forgot to mention that, by making the bottom toe loop larger, you end up with part of the ball of the foot exposed, so you still have some gription. If I had covered the entire ball it would have been too slippery
