I know that Tribal Alchemy is only in a few weeks but maybe you could at least go to Sooz's workshop. I'm sure you'll meet some ATSers there that might help you out. I'll be there but I'm not ATS and I'm from south Texas, so I'm not very helpful.

That was very helpful! But still none were close by. It did give me a chance to get the dates for GS and TT and locations to aim for. It was in a page I hadn't even thought about looking at, since I'm not in SF.
I may need to make a new thread for my search.
I just need someone to mentor me before the trainings.

Soleil,
If you look on FCBD sister studio page, you'll find those who definitely teaches ATS maybe within your area. If not, you might want to drop them a line and they may know of someone in the area who does teach it. Good luck.

You should still get in contact with the teacher because she may want to continue out of a studio in her house but doesn't really want to advertize that y'know? I learned ATS from the videos for a long time so it's good but in class instruction and also thee most important element, drilling and dancing with other dancers in a group is essential! Good luck! Don't give up!

Hi, my name is Soleil.
I joined this group, oh a month or so ago. I don't think I gave an introduction then.

While I need some support about this topic, I don't want to stir any uneasy topics.
I read the ATSfaq pages yesterday, all the links. There was a lot of great informations, explainations, and opinions.

Here's the thing; there is no one, no studio, no troupe anywhere near me that is ATS.

Ok, lol don't feel sorry for me ; )

it's just a funny circumstance. I'm in a metropolitan town tucked between Shreveport an Dallas, realistically we are ALWAYS a decade behind the contemporary Western world. Somehow the town leaders made sure we were as wired as Dallas and Houston.

Back to the point; there is no living being here to foster me in ATS.
I am a liitle overwhelmed by all the individuals, cities, studios, troupes "out there."

is there someone on the board who could point me in the direction of a studio (Dallas or Shreveport) that really uses FCBD ATS?

There are plenty of reasons why I choose this discipline over others, I really want to stick with this format before I learn any other ways.
The studio here has no interest in helping me and has tried to persuade me onto other genres. I learned Cabaret at that studio and have been studying FCBD from the DVDs on my own. At some point I will have to be critiqued and really part of the reason I like ATS is to perform with other dancers.

Any help would be most appreciated!
Thanks,

I think I see what you're asking....so if you are ITS, it's probably because you've made up your own moves, so I think putting the name of your troupe first then the ITS after it works. For instance, our troupe calls our format "Wildcard ITS". I think you could just call if "ITS" for short though if you wanted to.

Hmmm, I know what you are asking but when I tried to type it out it didn't sound exactly the way I thought it would! LOL!!

Hi! This is all very informative, I've been calling myself ATS because my teachers are based in FCBD moves, but also create their own, take classes from other troupes and then adapt them to our particular stylings. To me this still sounds like the "spirit" of ATS, putting it all on the right-foot-first, etc. Would I be lying if I didn't call us ITS because of the branch-off moves?

You do NOT need to be GS or TT to be considered "ATS". It's something ti work towards if you are seriously and passionate about pursing ATS. For sure. Diana and I have been doing ATS for years now, and were only certified last November.

Valizan said it well.

I believe the costuming has 'wiggle room' ... as FatChance has even displayed this from time to time, with some variations on their look. But the "wiggle room", or even the room for self expression, always seems to still fall within the general look of the costuming as a whole, and more importantly, the feel that the costuming gives.

I don't know if I agree about using different costuming.

ATS has a basic uniform: Choli, coin bra, headwrap, belt, pantaloons under a big skirt. But when people move a little bit away from one of these elements (a stretchy top instead of a choli, or no coin bra) it doesn't stop the movement from being ATS. I am not advocating ATS troupes move to wearing Melos and/or stripey socks... far from it... but there is a bit of room for creativity within the uniform without one having the ATS label lifted away.

Zina, the three tenets aside, if you add different movements, it is ITS. Last thing I heard, it was about the MOVEMENT vocabulary.

Sometimes around here and elsewhere the opinion seems to be you SHALL/MUST be GS certified in order to call what you do ATS. But I believe you don't have to be GS certified (training not available) but if you stick to the three tenants of ATS then it's ATS. Conversely, it would seem that when someone who had the training goes on to add other movements or use different costuming or music then it turns into ITS. Yes??????

Got it! So the vocabulary of FCBD is solely ATS.

So.....

Is there a specific vocabulary for the other formats, or are they FCBD vocab as well as other moves? Does the vocab of the other have their own name, or is all blacksheep, caravan and such simply the ITS/TGI?

does that even make sense? Cant figure out how to word what I'm trying to ask...

indeed we are using fcbd group formations , combos and costume orientation but there are some variations that we chose to keep , so we are a ITS (or TGI) groupe for sure!

Rabekah hit the nail on the head. Anything outside of the ATS vocab is not ATS. Easy! if your troupe every performs non-ATS variations, even in solos, it is better to not use ATS to describe what you do.

Ditto what Valizan said. If you are doing ATS-only movements and formations and appropriate costuming, you are ATS. Group improv beyond that is ITS (I call it Tribal Group Improv--TGI--because I think the GROUP part is important in the terminology, but ITS does roll off the tongue well for ATS dancers who have moved to other work and like it *sounding* similar)

Hmm...interesting question...I know that my instructor does teach us the true ATS moves, but then shows us variations that come from other groups, such as Ultra Gypsy, etc.

She does always stress that those variations are not used in standard ATS, but if we're doing a solo or working with our own troupe, it could be seen as a fusion style...nothing wrong with the variations, it's just that they're not purely ATS.

Did that make any sense?

I've been studying with my troupe members based on ATS moves (we're studing only Fat Chance videos) but some of us have some experience with blacksheep moves and gypsy caravan moves (from videos too), we're trying to set our vocabulary mostly in fat chance moves and combos but some of the moves derived from the other groups tend to show sometimes... Are we an ATS group or an ITS group? We understand the concept of coordinated group improvisation and keys but i stil have doubt about this issues...
