I've been doing that diagonal line thing one in some of my classes and just called it Two Lines because I didn't know if it had a proper name. :)

And to answer the earlier question, yes, it was "Sassy Sweet" because we step up into their faces, shoulders a shimmyin' (Sheesh, when did I get an Appalachian hillbilly persona?) and then drop arms and be sweetness and sugar. My sugar may have an black ant in it, but sweet nonetheless. :D

Well, it's two duets dueling each other. Hence the name. I think its supposed to be Dueling Duets, plural, rather than singular.

We don't usually do it with more than duets. We've done the trio diagonals, like in SF Beledi during Ishwini Fik - both trios in performance angle, each diagonal capable to lead their own moves or sync up - but that tends to get fairly choreographed.

I was wondering what makes a dueling duet a duet? Duets are two people dancing. We've done this with three people each in two different groups. Its the same concept but with more than two people per group. I'm just wondering the true definition of what a dueling duet is. I think its so beautiful and when we did it, I had a few people come up to me with compliments on how they liked the delayed effect it gives from one group to the next.

Miss Sooz, I'm guessing it hasn't even been considered yet... but y'know I sent in my electronic order form for FCBD Volume 8: Fantastic Formations & Carolena's Coolest Creative Combos. They usually don't make me wait this long... ;-))))

You're lucky to have access to Carolena and FatChance, Sooz. I won't get to meet/study with her until September.

So Sooz... Here's the game... :) If you were putting out said DVD (FCBD V8: FF&CCCC), what would you add that isn't on any of the others already?

The Sassy Sweet Combo would be my first choice. Just cause its a classic.

V.
Yeh... I think I'm a groupie too. :)

Watches YouTube clip...

HolyFreakamoley! That just looks like WAY too much fun! But also a lot of work, because you'd really have too concentrate to keep A) from following the wrong leader. B) one bar behind... or forward.

But you'd definitely need music that held to two repetitions so that the second duet could keep up, right?

So that'll all be on FCBD Volume 8: More Moves & Cool Combos. Chico Crossover, Duelling Duets... :)))) (Yeh, I know... but I figure if I keep wishing out loud, someday my dreams may come true...:)))))

i could see that. it is similiar in that way, the movement of the two lines is different. but in dueling duets, both duets are facing center, with the lead being on the left.
the leaders of the duets can switch places, or each duet can switch leads.

we did a choreo a couple of years ago where we started in a quartet, faded the quartet, turned in toward the center, and it became dueling duets.

so far i haven't seen any video on youtube of a dueling duet. and i don't have anything that's in a form where i could upload it.

The only reason I made that connection, Miss Wendy, is because the two lines weren't in synch. It looked definitely like the second line was purposely a bar back in the music.

So now I really want to see what this looks like. Anyone find the YouTube clip yet?

hey valizan,

y'know, i don't think the concept of dueling duets had come up when beledi was made. of if it had, it was still fairly new. there are no dueling duets in beledi. there is one formation with two diagonal lines, carolena led one, and karen may have led the other. :-)

>the duet on stage right is following<
the lead of the following duet is the dancer on the left, just like in normal lead and follow.

also...the two leads can change positions and the two duets can change within their own duet.

whoa, that was hard to describe...

the inward facing duets is called dueling duets. and we did plan that ahead of time, there's no cue for it.

with the dueling duets, the lead is the lead of the duet on the left (if you are onstage facing the audience, that is.)

the duet on stage right is following, but has the option to hold a move for a few counts before switching to the new move done by the lead on the left. you can vary the movements, but then sync both duets up at various times. i hope that makes sense :-)

FCBD had some really creative formations in the Tribal Fest 07 set. I've been trying to figure out the formation where you moved from a 4-dancer stagger into a formation where there were 2 inward facing duets (hips at an angle to the audience).

Is there a cue for that?

Once the stagger changed into the inward facing duets, it looked like there was a cannon of movements going on.

It was really dynamic to watch.
