I know this song is inappropriate for ATS, but dang it's fun. Play the Prometory from Last of the Mohicans. Beautiful!

Mon, February 23, 2009 - 9:35 AMIf this is the piece where they run along the cliff edges I think I would cry.........but it's VERY beautiful :)

Re: Inappropriate music
Tue, February 24, 2009 - 6:45 PMWhy is it inappropriate? as long as you are doing ATS moves?
Guess I've gotten too "fusiony" =)

Re: Inappropriate music
Wed, February 25, 2009 - 6:13 PMI agree with Angelia.... I don't think it would even be "fusiony",,, as long as the steps are the same. It's nice to be able to do both, kinda "classic"ATS music and something new or off the wall depending on the event.

Re: Inappropriate music
Thu, February 26, 2009 - 9:35 AMFolkloric music, especially Egyptian, is best with ATS. Some electronica is fine, but it should have relevance to middle eastern dance.
Sometimes we, (FatChance), will throw in something unexpected at the end of our set to bow to, but generally, we stick to middle eastern music for our sets.
Otherwise, it does tend to lean toward being more "fusiony". -

Re: Inappropriate music
Fri, February 27, 2009 - 8:09 AMSo is it the type of music that makes ATS vocabulary "fusiony" or is it the movement vocabulary that makes a dance "ATS"?
So if executing FCBD vocabulary to say...Prince "Purple Rain". Does that then turn the ATS into "fusion"?
Just curious.

Re: Inappropriate music
Fri, February 27, 2009 - 10:21 AMIf you look at ATS costuming, you'll see that it's mostly a folkloric style. Lots of textiles, tassels, old jewelry and adornments. The dance steps are inspired by folk dances. Folkloric music just fits ATS. It's what inspires the costuming and the dance steps. So, to take all that and drop the music, you have something out of place. It just doesn't look right to something that has no relation. We've used modern songs before, here and there, but mostly, they are folkloric-ish songs with a synthesized beat to it. And as FC, we've used unrelated pieces to bow to just as a fun topper to a set or as artistic choreographies in a show, but really, we try to stay to what makes sense.
I think trying to decide what makes a group fusion or ATS, based on the music, is subjective. In my eyes, it all goes together to make a complete package and are not sold separately. I would not want to damage the integrity of the dance form, by using music that doesn't enhance the dance. -

Re: Inappropriate music
Fri, February 27, 2009 - 10:40 AMWell said, Sandi. For being such a new person to the love of ATS I get about the music/movements/costume working together. It'll take me a while to get it all together but I'll get there...some day...eventually... :) -

Re: Inappropriate music
Sun, March 29, 2009 - 11:17 AMNot all ATS troops that I have seen only wear the big skirts and jewlery. and yes, they are doing "the" format.
Not fusion, not anything "off". (yes, some have taken certification)
I say its a matter of personal choice as to what music you use, as long as it isnt innapropriate for your audience.
Anything with a 4:4 beat works.
But again, that is my personal opinion.

Re: Inappropriate music
Tue, March 3, 2009 - 11:12 PMI imagine that its just that I am so sick of the same beat and music all the time.
like some change. I like to be able to execute my ATS moves to whatever music moves me at the time. And Folkloric music hasn't been it lately...
Then again... I am VERY much a Fusion dancer with deep roots in ATS...
(I'm really enjoying Circus Contraption) -

Sun, March 29, 2009 - 7:30 PM"I imagine that its just that I am so sick of the same beat and music all the time."
And it's funny, because for me personally, I'm sick of hearing a lot of the same o' fusion stuff. For a while there, I was hoping and praying nobody else would dance to anything on Pentaphobe's first album. Seriously. So glad people kind of moved away from that for a while. -

Re: Inappropriate music
Sun, March 29, 2009 - 10:44 PMOh Leslie!
I agree with you!
Everyone sees someone "famous" use a song... and EVERYONE has to use it!
I like finding off the wall stuff that just slaps you in the face with FUN!
But yah.. the same ole fusion stuff drives me insane.

Re: Inappropriate music
Mon, March 30, 2009 - 3:00 PMIf the ATS roots run that deep.......
It's helpful to undertand that what you may hear as the same music, I, or we, or several of us, hear as completely different music.
For instance, I tend to generalize 'country western' music, although I should not. To me, it all sounds the same. But, I would not go on a public dicussion forum on country music and state that it's all the same to me, because I KNOW, that it is not all the same. It's just that I don't allow myself the ear for it.
I would attempt to say something along the lines of, "Geez, I have a hard time distinguishing between different rhythms or chords in this genre of music, therefor, it's just not my style." -
-
Re: Inappropriate music
Tue, March 31, 2009 - 9:11 AMI don't have any issues hearing or even relating to middle eastern music, and I can dance to anything with a beat... and sometimes without...
Its a matter of taste of music I think.

I guess this song is legal!
Sat, March 28, 2009 - 6:29 PMWooHoo! I just saw a video of Devyani performing to Desert Rose...that makes it ATS appropriate, yes? At practice today I voiced my opinion that if FCBD uses a song then it's legal to use...I'd say the same applies here. Does it? someone please say yes, please say yes, please say yes......................................................... -

Re: I guess this song is legal!
Sat, March 28, 2009 - 9:14 PMThat's pretty much how I see it :) -

Re: I guess this song is legal!
Sat, March 28, 2009 - 9:52 PMOh we used that for a killer set at Rakkassah one year. It's great fun to dance to!

Re: I guess this song is legal!
Sun, March 29, 2009 - 12:43 AMThere is no "legal" or "illegal"! I don't think Carolena would like to think of it that way at all! But there is certainly more appropriate or less, or more successful or less! What supports the movement/aesthetics? Following the lead of FC is of course easiest, but I am sure even Carolena would take inspiration from the right music used by another group interpreting her style, were it to support the elements of the dance!! -
-
Re: I guess this song is legal!
Sun, March 29, 2009 - 7:34 PMWhen I attended my TT, I remember (very well) the conversation about music. Some pretty specific things were said, and Carolena made her feelings clear on how she felt about people using certain kinds of music, vs. other kinds. But she never said what was "allowed and not allowed. She simply let everyone know what she "preferred" for her vision of ATS. That's all.
So is anything "inappropriate" ?? Not really. It's really more about preference and vision (and as Sandi said) about "the complete package" ... which for me, means folkloric music 90% of the time. And I love it and embrace it as so :) -
-
Re: I guess this song is legal!
Sun, March 29, 2009 - 7:55 PMThat is exactly the impression I have gotten from my GS/TT/TT2 interactions. There are what Carolena would recommend (strongly), and the rest is up to you to decide for yourself what makes sense in the context of ATS and the audiences you are performing for. -

Re: I guess this song is legal!
Sun, March 29, 2009 - 8:29 PM*Nod*
Yes.
However, I personally, am not into drifting off to much as far as music goes. Diana and I do use something "different" from time to time, but we feel more "at home" with the folkloric music. It's what we respond to best. And personally, it makes me really happy. I feel like I am part of something bigger than I can ever possible comprehend being, when I dance to folkloric music :)

Re: I guess this song is legal!
Sun, March 29, 2009 - 9:01 PMI like the folkloric, traditional drumming, whatever it is called that is recommended for ATS. It makes me feel so to the earth. However, sometimes you hear a song that you instantly know you love. When one of those songs is used by FCBD or Devyani, it makes it that much better!
I was trying to explain it to our group as to what type of music our ATS numbers should use according to what Sandi, Wendy and all the other ATS teachers here advise. Some of our members have a very tribal fusion background and like songs which are Western or American pop, hip hop, etc. I point them to these threads so they don't think I'm making stuff up the way I want.
Thank you all for your explanations and patience. -

Re: I guess this song is legal!
Mon, April 6, 2009 - 4:46 PMThanks for the thread, this is a topic that constantly comes up with Seba and I when we are creating new sets for WildCard BellyDance. I am always trying to "push" the boundaries a bit while she wants to make sure the songs are more traditionally rooted or culturally relevant. Every now and then though we find a song or a group that is outside the tribal box, yet is so charismatic or with such a good beat and tribal "feel" that. it just works.
Another important step is to see if a song "works" with other songs. Sometimes crossing genres can be smooth as silk and sometimes... not so much, but if you are creative you might be able to transition from Oud to bagpipes IF you have the right two songs.
Finally, I'm just curious if others out there seem to have this experience.... There seem to be Tons of good "medium" speed songs, fewer slow songs (that aren't arrhythmic) , but good fast songs... that aren't chaotic or insane seem harder to come by. -
-
Re: I guess this song is legal!
Mon, April 6, 2009 - 6:03 PMWe find tons and tons of slow songs, but do find good fast to be hardest!

Re: I guess this song is legal!
Wed, April 1, 2009 - 2:35 PMThe thing that I love best about ATS / ITS / GIS..whatever the latest name is..is that no matter where my girls and I are at, no matter what we are wearing, if music comes on..and we can dance to it..we have immediately created a group performance....on the spot.
We have danced for bluegrass and celloist, and DJ's mixing funky beats..and rock band..and live musicians of many instruments..accordions even..even a softly strummed guitar...and sometimes what ever happens to be played over the speakers at that moment....isn't it about turning the music into a dance regardless of what the style of music is?
I think that is what makes improv dancers stand out from choreographed dancers..is the ability to turn anything into a group performance.. -
