I went to my first ATS workshop last weekend, having been learning at home up until now, and I had the most amazing time. We learned for 3 hours straight and then went in to a mega group dance at the end with everything we'd learnt. I was nervous as hell because I ended up leading first and my mind just went blank but once I'd managed to safely manoeuvre myself back into the chorus and actually watched I suddenly came over all emotional. It was just so beautiful watching all these women that had never met before working together in perfect harmony and the atmosphere in the room was just magical.
It was one of those moments that will stay with me forever.
So, I was just wondering if any of you have favourite stories about that first time and when it all suddenly connected for you?

Thu, April 30, 2009 - 9:38 PMAlicia... I've been dancing in public for 3 years... I still get flustered and freak out when Its my turn to lead...
and yes, pick two or three moves you are comfortable with... do them. Over and over and over again. sometime... you will start pulling out other moves =0

Re: The first touch of magic
Thu, April 30, 2009 - 8:40 AMI've only been to 3 classes and I'm scared to *start* at the lead, but I don't mind (relatively speaking) leading later. My teacher puts us in pairs where we have no choice but to lead. I practice my moves throughout the week like I have to pay the rent with them so I'm getting comfy with the moves.
Good luck! -

Re: The first touch of magic
Thu, April 30, 2009 - 8:46 AMIf your nervous about leading pick three or four moves that you feel really confident with and make yourself a little combo to use when your on the spot then transition out of it when your done and give the lead away. The more you practice leading now in the safety of your dance sisters the more comfortable you'll be with it when your performing in front of an audience.
Best wishes!!!

Re: The first touch of magic
Thu, April 30, 2009 - 11:57 PMI still remember my first class - Collette Hunter was teaching, and she was pregnant. I was so enthralled with how beautiful she was dancing, she looked like an iconic Earth Mother! I knew I'd be stickin' around for years to come!
It's OK to want to wait to lead. At FCBD, we practice all positions in class, but in performance, new dancers start off in chorus only, then work up to a follow-only position, then finally take the lead when everyone is sure they're ready. I remember feeling so self-conscious in the lead for at least 2 years and I was so grateful for this process! It allowed me to see the community aspect of ATS and to trust my dance sisters, whose job it was to support me and help make me look good (so, not pulling out advanced moves or making muddy or lightning-quick cues). Now I do my best to be that same type of supportive troupe member and honor that beauty of women working together. -
