I have a question regarding choice of arm movements with a reverse taxeem.
I usually have my arms to the side and do a outward floreo. I floreo the hand with the hip that's moving up and out. I've seen Carolena do out floreos above her head (vol. 4) when performing the reverse taxeem. Okay to do arm undulations? This doesn't come naturally to me but had a student ask. -lm

Re: Reverse Taxeem - arms?
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 10:39 AMYes! The arm undulation reverses, just like the taxeem reverses. It gives the movement a very different look and feel. -

Thu, March 6, 2008 - 11:50 AMI don't understand what you mean the arm undulation reverses. Can you break that down? Or give me a link to a video? -

Re: Reverse Taxeem - arms?
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 1:46 PMWhat I always envision is that in reg. taxeem w/arms, the elbow lifting is "lifting" the hip on the same side. So, if you envision the opposite, the "dropping" elbow is attached to the "dropping" hip....
Hope that makes sense....hopefully someone will post a video...much easier to see than explain! :) -

Re: Reverse Taxeem - arms?
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 5:40 PMI think of it as the elbow coming down is meeting with the top of the reverse taqsim. So when the hip is up, the elbow is down, so it forshortens the distance. It's a feeling of opposition--a lift complemented by a lowering. It's a funky feeling, I dig it. -

Re: Reverse Taxeem - arms?
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 10:45 PMi think of it as the focus being more on the downward movement of the arms and the hips.
That's a tough one to break down in print. I've looked for a video of it online, and couldn't find one.

Re: Reverse Taxeem - arms?
Sat, March 8, 2008 - 10:37 PMI teach my girls to sync-up active hip to down arm movement. Reg taxeem active hip is down/out/up (active arm is down/active hip is down). Maya-active hip is up/out/down. (active arm is down/active hip is up)
It helps them understand that they need to match the up and down arms (snake arms) with the active hip so they're looking at arm cues, not hip cues. It's definately a visual explaination.
An exercise that I've found helpful is to get students into snake arms then do several rounds of taxeem, then several rounds of Maya then flip flop between the two. What they learn is that the snake arms are the same, it's the active hip that changes.
It helps them connect up/down arms with up/down hips.
