I have watched the FCBD videos with dueling duets over and over and I'm still unclear on something. How exactly are the two duets aligned on stage?
It seems (from the videos) that if the stage is a clock with the audience at 12 and the back of the stage at 6, that the duet to stage L is angled to about the 1 o'clock position, with the follower right behind and slightly to the right of the leader.
The following duet seems to be slightly upstage (towards the 6 o'clock position), but I can't tell the angle. Are they directly facing the other duet (so facing around 7 o'clock) with the follower behind and slightly to the right of the leader? Or is this duet angled more to the 8 o'clock position, opened up to the audience more?
Man, I wish I had an ariel view of these videos!
Thanks so much!
Amy

Re: Dueling Duets - alignment/positions
Thu, May 7, 2009 - 7:07 PMOverhead, they'll basically look like they're in two diagonals - staggered.
Another way to look at it is, the "audience" of the respective duets are each other or their "fronts" are the center stage mark. If you set up your duets (complete with performance angles) just to the left of each other with the center stage line inbetween, you'll be in the dueling duet formation.
I hope that didn't confuse you more.

Re: Dueling Duets - alignment/positions
Thu, May 7, 2009 - 7:56 PMMmm, not sure what you mean. I'm guessing the two duets are mirror images of each other, and are facing each other directly.
When you say performance angle, would it be as if the stage L duet is basing their performance angle off the R hand flat side of the stage and the stage R duet is basing its angle off the L hand flat side of the stage (if we image the stage as square). So it's like a regular duet facing the audience at 12 o'clock/front was turned 90 degrees to the R or L.
Is it as if the 4 person formation had a horizontal line running across the stage, the the front two people are the one duet and the back two people are the second duet, and then they would back away from each other until the leaders are facing each other. Which duet is closer to the audience, the one with the overall leader or the second duet? -

Re: Dueling Duets - alignment/positions
Thu, May 7, 2009 - 8:28 PMOkay, here's another way to see it.
In a standard quartet, facing towards the audience, fade the back row forward. Then pivot so that half of the quartet is facing the other half. You'll be in formation then. -

Re: Dueling Duets - alignment/positions
Thu, May 7, 2009 - 8:41 PMSandy, that was a great way to explain it. Took my little 25 watted brain a little time to get it, but I get it now! Woohoo! -

Re: Dueling Duets - alignment/positions
Thu, May 7, 2009 - 9:07 PMAh, okay. So the two leaders are facing each other head on. Thanks! -

Re: Dueling Duets - alignment/positions
Thu, May 7, 2009 - 9:13 PMthe leads aren't head on, the duets are.
both leads are facing in toward center, but the lead of each duet is to the left. The same rules apply as if you were in a duet facing the audience. I hope that makes sense and doesn't confuse things further! -

Re: Dueling Duets - alignment/positions
Thu, May 7, 2009 - 9:36 PMHmm, not getting the exact wording but I think I'm getting the general meaning. I do better with visuals. Like I said, I wish there was an ariel view! -

Re: Dueling Duets - alignment/positions
Fri, May 8, 2009 - 6:55 AMHah! I've literally pushed and pulled my troupe mates around!
I think what I'm getting is:
*take a 4 person formation
* fade to a line
* split in the middle so two duets are facing each other
* set into performance angle (using the opposite wall/side for orientation), and that's the orientation you want. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Dueling Duets - alignment/positions
Fri, May 8, 2009 - 9:13 AMNo, don't fade into a line. Fade into a regular faded formation (still a zig zag from overhead).

Re: Dueling Duets - alignment/positions
Fri, May 8, 2009 - 4:19 AMIt's like this, if I'm reading correctly, and if the spacing turns out okay.
Regular quartet formation (more or less):
V
V
V
V
Faded:
V
V
V
V
Turned to the center between 1&2 and 3&4 to make the dueling duet:

<

I hope this works, and that it's right.

Fri, May 8, 2009 - 4:19 AMLovely. Disregard. Spacing did not show up at all!
