I've already posted to the FCBD tribe, but....
Could anyone help me with this? Carolena has explained the significance of a lot of the movements in the moving meditation ie: the space you dance on, your ancestors, your teachers etc.....but I'm not sure I remember an explination of the lotus. In egyptian lore,it stands for creation and rebirth. Is this the cas in the meditation or is there another significance?
Thanks!

Re: Significance of the Lotus in the moving meditation
Fri, June 5, 2009 - 10:47 PMWell, I'm not sure about the significance for dance, but I do know that the lotus is a symbol of beauty from adversity...the lotus flower grows in the deep muck of swamps and ponds...in fact, the deeper the mud, the more beautiful the flower...so it is a symbol of overcoming adversity and letting the beauty shine thru... -

Re: Significance of the Lotus in the moving meditation
Sat, June 6, 2009 - 2:07 AMYa know, I remember hearing Carolena explain this as an anecdote about the lotus, but not specifically in the moving mediation, I would love to hear if this is significant in that context as well, or if there is another additional meaning there...

Re: Significance of the Lotus in the moving meditation
Sat, June 6, 2009 - 1:34 PMI remember her explaining it and this is what I wrote down in my notebook at the GS:
The lotus is a flower that can go down into darkness but needs to also come up into the light. If it stays in the light too long it can burn. So, it goes back down into the dark mud at night to get nutrients and revive itself. Its like a balance. And that the water represents conscienceless.
That's all I really have about it but I loved how she explained that to us. It gave that move so much meaning and it was quite beautiful :) -

Re: Significance of the Lotus in the moving meditation
Sat, June 6, 2009 - 9:17 PMI thought it symbolizes life. I'm pretty sure Carolena explains it on one of the videos. If I track it down I'll post it. -

Sun, June 7, 2009 - 7:14 AMI loved how she said the lotus had to rise for the light, and recoil to the dark to rest and be fed -- the balance of life. -

Re: Significance of the Lotus in the moving meditation
Mon, June 8, 2009 - 7:11 AMAlso cool is the idea that the lotus plunges downward to be nourished by the mud, but not dirtied from it. Great imagery for a bad day from which one can learn something, but not be dragged down by...

Re: Significance of the Lotus in the moving meditation
Sun, June 7, 2009 - 1:24 PMMy favourite mantra for when I meditate is 'Ohm mani padme hum' (hope I've spelled that correctly...been a long time since I've actually seen it in print)...but from my understanding, it means 'Hail to the jewel at the center of the lotus', of which the jewel is our heart and spirit...might give a bit of insight into the significance for the use in dance. *shrugs* -

Re: Significance of the Lotus in the moving meditation
Mon, June 8, 2009 - 1:20 PMon the subject of moving meditation, i was in sf, a couple of months ago, at fcbd and had the thrill of being in the level 3 saturday class and carolena taught. she did the "full on" puja, not just the one taught in the videos. i had seen the puja done on some of the fcbd youtube performances. i think it was a performance with deviyani. is it the milwaukee performance? does someone know which youtube vidoe i'm referring to? i really want to learn it and pass along to my level 3 students. -

Re: Significance of the Lotus in the moving meditation
Thu, June 11, 2009 - 10:06 AMThis is not the official Carolena version, but because the lotus and then touching the floor follows the part about the space that we dance in, and because the gesture for the space that we dance in sort of includes the 4 directions, I always use the lotus and then touching the floor to recognize the space above and the space below. Then the ears for the music, then the floor AGAIN to honor the Earth. I KNOW that's not the way Carolena explains it, but it makes more sense to me that way.
For what it's worth. -

Re: Significance of the Lotus in the moving meditation
Mon, June 15, 2009 - 9:47 AMit's worth...Sharon. I totally get that. Lotus has so much significance, if it touches you in some special way...that's what it means. -

Re: Significance of the Lotus in the moving meditation
Sun, July 26, 2009 - 6:25 PMin some meditations I have done, they included visualizingthe chakra points opening like blossoming flowers... from what I have learned, in the moving meditation the "lotus" palms begin at heart level, and rotate as it is raised above the head, to me it seems to be mirroring opening yourself up to the dance, allowing the creative energies to flow. I also feel some days like I am holding the lotus up as an offering, to dedicate my dance to honor the divine...
some days I feel like I am holding up my lotus like a goblet, asking divine energy to be poured into me, to fuel my dance and life (my tribal classes are late evening, after a full day of chasing 2 toddlers, yet I always come home humming wiith energy and can't get to bed for a while after...)
