Both of these moves start facing front but then turn. My question is, how much of a turn? Is it one to the front, one to the back and then return to the front (half turns)? Or 1/3 or 1/4 turns? Or if it's not fixed / set, how do the followers know how much of a turn the leader intends when she initiates the turn?

Re: Torso Twist and Circle Step
Sat, May 26, 2007 - 6:54 PMShades Of Araby (my troupe) do them as 1/4 turns because they tend to be slow moves.

Re: Torso Twist and Circle Step
Sun, May 27, 2007 - 2:15 AMThey can be done in 1/4, 1/3, or 1/2, depending on the music, the mood, the leader, etc. At Fat Chance they are mostly done in thirds. One has to keep an eye out-the 1/2 is a more energetic move, but it's pretty easy to distinguish between the 1/4 and the 1/3. The 1/4 and the 1/2 are much less often done, so the 1/3 can be considered pretty much the standard.

Re: Torso Twist and Circle Step
Sun, May 27, 2007 - 2:16 AMOnce the leader initiates the turn, whoever is furthest out in the direction of the turn, who can't see anyone else, is the new leader and dictates where the turn stops and the pace of the follow-thru. Just like in a slow pivot, everyone keeps an eye on each other to see how fast or slow the pivot is and to match movement. So, if it's a torso twist in 3rd's, the person in the back left corner stops it, follows thru and then starts the next turn, passing on to the person in the back right corner, then back to the front. That is usually done with a trio or more. In duets, you're more likely to do 1/2 turns because of easier maneuverability.

Re: Torso Twist and Circle Step
Sun, May 27, 2007 - 6:40 AMThanks for the replies. Sandi, your answer gives me the details I was looking for: how to determine if it's going to be 1/2, 1/3 or 1/4. You always do such a great job putting dance into words. Mil gracias. -

Re: Torso Twist and Circle Step
Sun, May 27, 2007 - 3:31 PMNo kidding! This is such an incredible resource for me, to have them here on my computer screen answering my questions. In one class a student asks me something I don't have an answer for, and by the next class I can answer them because Carolena or Wendy or Sandi or Megha have given me the information I need. I'm such a lucky little tribaleƱa. -

Mon, May 28, 2007 - 11:50 AMHuzzah to that, Sharon! :)
I keep bragging about how Tribe.net allows me to resource the best of the best all over the globe. I may not be able to find out the answer in my town, but I can ask Australia or California or Mexico [g] and have the answer in a day or so.
I feel extraordinarily lucky!
[winks and blows kisses to everyone]

Re: Torso Twist and Circle Step
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 8:26 PMI love both those steps and what irks me is seeing students work soooo hard at it and make it sooo big and huge! ATS is all about illusion, in my opinion, the grace, elegance, and power in all the moves. If you make it big & messy, it just looks bad.....does anybody know what I'm talking bout? It's usually when people have learned these moves from someone who watched the video once, or from someone who took a class from someone who took a workshop with someone who watched the video once and now knows tribal! HA! -

Re: Torso Twist and Circle Step
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 6:23 AMThat would be us then Sooz.
Our little group ONLY has the DVDs to go by because we have absolutely no ATS here OR even any Teacher Trained Teachers.
I personally have taken numerous workshops which have been an absolute mine (thank you Moirai on the weekend!!!!).
Therein lies the problem. I live in an ATS desert. There is no one here so we get together and work and improve and do workshops for guidance.
At the moment I am waiting to hear if I have made the GS in Glastonbury which will be fantastic because there are so many ladies here in Devon wanting the ATS love including our little group.
That said we all have realised that less is more ;-) -

Re: Torso Twist and Circle Step
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 1:43 PMHumblest of apologies if I offended, that was not my intention.... I think my concern is the lack of good training with this dance. And believe me I feel your pain. Before I actually found my teacher oh so many years ago, I just had the video to go by! But, yes, just remember to keep it elegant, graceful and all will be beautiful! The power is in the step, not in how big you can make it. Happy shimmies! -

Re: Torso Twist and Circle Step
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 1:58 PMSooz you would never offend me :D
Sometimes its just really frustrating because I live in the South West of England and everything happens in London or the North.
The last weekend I drove six hours to go to a workshop, camped in a caravan at the end of a USAF Base here in UK with planes nearly on the roof of the caravan, danced for four hours, and then drove six hours home. I was a little pooped!
I was lucky to have a fab MED teacher before I moved so I appreciate the finer things and it was lovely to find out that we were capable of dancing with others and it be okay.
I think I need to take a real long holiday, like however long the fundamentals course is at the studio LOL Im sure that hubby wouldnt like that idea!!!
