nefer tem had a gig at people's park this last sunday. we showed up in costume, a carpet to put on the tan bark and our cd. leigh anne handed the cd to the sound guy and he says, uh we only have an ipod hook up, no cd player. a little put out, because she had made all the sound arrangements with their organizer, she returned to the group and told us about the situation. tiana pulled out her ipod, put some songs into "on the go," and we started discussing who was dancing what, when and with whom. but with true hippie ingenuity, the sound man rigged up something to play the cd on.
we were ready to dance the new unplanned set, and no one was very nervous about it, not even the newer dancers.
the moral of the story is, if you've got your improv chops down, you can dance anytime, anywhere, with anyone.

Re: the beauty of ats improv...
Tue, April 28, 2009 - 7:35 AMSo true! We were looking forward to dancing the songs on the CD, but no one was going to panic if it didn't happen - we were ready to roll with anything that came our way. And Wavy Gravy announced us!!! What a great gig! There's video on the Nefer Tem tribe where you can see Wavy Gravy politely asking a "volunteer" to sit down.

Re: the beauty of ats improv...
Tue, April 28, 2009 - 12:23 PMThats so funny, 'cuz we usually get the opposite from Amar. He likey the cd. As do we. The IPod is great in concept, but there's so many things that can go wrong. Battery runs out, someone accidentally locks it, selects the wrong playlist, etc. Cds, all they have to do is pop it in and push play. But we've had times when even that is too hard for the djs. We had one gig, at a recording studio no less, where they somehow played our cd too fast and put it on shuffle! Gah!
You all looked great out there though. Lovely job, ladies! -

Re: the beauty of ats improv...
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 11:56 AMAfter this weekend, I can add one!
We were at a dance retreat, and on Saturday night there is a hafla where anyone who wants to perform for the rest of the group can. Three of my students decided to get together and perform that night, and had it all planned out. It's time for them to step up, and they get up and stand at the ready for their entrance...and the ancient CD player won't play their CD. They try everything but it doesn't work.
The performance can be pretty informal, so no one would have been surprised if they had said "Oh well, next year" and sat back down. But instead, they asked if anyone had some music they might know from class or elsewhere, picked a track, and went ahead and performed anyway! I was so proud of them. :) And yes, it speaks to the power of da improv, baybeee! -

Wed, April 29, 2009 - 12:14 PMWait, Sharon! Don't you have a video on YouTube, of when your music malfunctioned at some event, and you were all still able to keep it together because of ATS?? I could have sworn you did! It was great!! -

Re: the beauty of ats improv...
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 2:28 PMYep, it's called "It's All Improv, Baby!"
www.youtube.com/watch
We have had times when the wrong CD was put in, when music got mixed up, when the venue wasn't what was promised, when people had to drop out due to illness or emergency, and so many other factors that can affect performances, and strong imrpov can pull you through!! -

Re: the beauty of ats improv...
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 1:31 PMIt wasn't ATS but I went to a show recently where the DJ started playing the wrong track and after a second of confused blinking the dancer just carried right on and improvved a whole dance. It turned out to be the best one of the night lol. Brought the house down!! -

Re: the beauty of ats improv...
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 2:40 PMWhen n.o.madic tribal was doing our weekly gig at the Den here in NOLA, we offered a weekly "challenge" to the audience: Bring in any song under five minutes, and we'd dance to it. People were amazed....
it was a fun schtick.
