Too good to be true

Oh, the double edged sword of good improving. Just been listening to a bellydance teacher say how well she thought Black Diamond (my troupe) performed at a dinner recently. She did not believe it was fully improvised ATS and went on to say that she had heard we had done a lot of rehearsing so it couldn't be improv!!! The really worrying thing is this is a small town with a lot of schools competing for students. Am just annoyed that her opinion about our improv performance will be brought into question. Bummer.

Oh man!!!! They just don't get it do they!!!

Cheers, Susan

Susan... are you kidding me?? What in the world!?!? I really think sometimes that some people simply have too much free time on their hands. That gal needs to worry less about you, and more about her own stuff. Seriously.

I know the instant reaction is to be annoyed or put off...try to look beyond that and take it as the compliment you and your sisters deserve. You must have been awesome and totally in simpatico to make her question it...

Of course you did a lot of rehearsing! We all do, that's how we stay fresh and sharp in our moves and we continue to learn to better read each others cues and body language.

And yes, they don't get it.

It sounds like she doesn't really understand the theory behind ATS and why it works as beautifully as it does, if she did she'd just be in total awe and she'd be proud of you. Even if your from another school, you should still be happy for your sisters in dance and what they have accomplished together and are sharing with the dance community.

Congrats to you and Black Diamond! Don't let her negativity sour the beautiful cohesive connection your tribe found that night!

    hugs,
    Tehani

yeah, what they all said...shoot, at work, dressed in my "work clothes", I practice in front of a tinted door (after looking closely to make sure no one is coming down the hall) to stay sharp and remember my cues...sometimes, I even ((gasp)) wear my I-Pod, and ((double gasp)) figure out moves to use on the doumbek....horrors!!

        Hey, Susan,

Wonder if you could chat with her to help her further understand ATS Improv. How, similarly to jazz where the performers know beforehand the names of the notes and how they do and don't fit together in a scale or a musical phrase, we know our vocab of movements and use our artistic senses to put them together with the music... whether jazz or ATS, the base knowledge is there and it's up to the artists to make it rock on stage! Sounds like Black Diamond rocked so much you had people fooled, that's awesome!

If she understands it better she'd prob. be a great help in explaining it to others and spreading the word some more.

I agree with the others--it's a compliment, whether she meant it that way or not! :) We get this, too. "No way was that group improv! You were too tight. So in synch!" They don't get that this is what lots of practice and interpersonal connection can do for imrpov!

Man it's annoying how many people reckon improv doesn't take hours of hard preparation work. Huge respect to you and your troupe for putting in the effort (and that's from someone who knows!).

Hmm...sounds like there may be just a lil bit of jealousy going on there...a 'how can they dance so smoothly together without it being choreo?' One of those times that you just want to tell them to play some damn music and show them what it's all about!

It doesn't have to be jealousy. Could be just ignorance. Beware saddling other women with the accusations of jealousy for every seeming slight! Sometimes, truly it is. But jumping to that conclusion is something we do to each other far too often to give ourselves the excuse to dismiss them, when really it could be something much more innocent.

True, but I've seen it too many times to not think it may be a motivating factor...just the disbelief in this instance and the tendency to discount that there are other ways to make a dance flow rather than a straight choreo is what gave me this idea...

Or it could be a lil' bit o' both. Jealousy, ignorance, and just a dash of too much free time on one's hands. Sounds about right :)

Either way, I think it's fabulous that Black Diamond rocks as hard as they do.

Keep up the good work, ladies... keep on leavin' all wondering, and secretly wanting more :)

Ye, I remember the first time I saw an ATS performance, there was some jealousy going on...but mine was more in the way of 'how do they do that?...and I wanna do that, tooooooo!!!' I was doing cab at the time and that performance is pretty much what decided me on going to tribal...best move I've ever made, dance-wise, anyhow...:-)

Yeah - the first time I saw ATS I loved what they did, but when I saw "An improvised piece" in the programme I thought "Yeah right, sure you can improvise a piece like that". Went home and found the same group on youtube, performing to the same song, but a totally different dance and the light dawned...

Yes, my first ATS experience was an improvised performance at the Sydney Middle Eastern Dance Festival, in about 2005.

It was a Sydney based troupe called Urban Turban, now known as Urban Qabila. In fact Deb Napier, the director hosted Australia's second Trance and Tribal Festival in 2008, the first one being hosted by Devi Mamak Ghawazi Caravan two years before that.

Anyway, thank you everyone for your viewpoint - and we shall keep on rehearsing and dancing together, ready for the next improv performance.

              Cheers, Susan
