ok!
You know the Hip up up drop drop drop step? This is not a move for whatever reason I have in my brain so I don't usually do it, and I'd love to get a clarification on how to cue it.
I use arm position, foot position, angle and intention, but I'd like to know if I am missing something...
Thanks!

Re: Hip Up Up Dropdropdrop Cue
Wed, March 18, 2009 - 10:54 AMDo you do it out of a pivot bump? I often do that, lowering both arms to shoulder height before going into it.
Also, we tend to reserve that for spots in the music where it fits, so we know to expect it during those moments. Fellahi, from Passion Sources, and Der Bauch, by MC Sultan, from Arabesque, both have spots where the u2d3 fit nicely. -

Re: Hip Up Up Dropdropdrop Cue
Wed, March 18, 2009 - 11:33 AMi do, usually, come out of hip bump with it; the confusion mainly was that the arms are similar for single bump and so how can you tell the difference between the two during a cue?
(i need to get vol 4 on DVD, my VCR doesnt work anymore :( ) -

Re: Hip Up Up Dropdropdrop Cue
Wed, March 18, 2009 - 12:45 PMHow I read Wendy's response was that if a certain piece of music is being used is it would be agreed that during a particular part of the music then they would do the U2D3.
Also for me the give away is any movement with the right foot because of the foot placement changes with the single bump - thats how I would read it when dancing anyway.
Im sure Wendy or even Sandi will clarify further still :) -

Re: Hip Up Up Dropdropdrop Cue
Wed, March 18, 2009 - 4:42 PMcoming out of a pivot bump, I wouldn't expect a single bump. I'd expect a single bump after a double bump.
LIsa, to clarify on the first line of your response, I wouldn't say it's agreed that move would come during that portion of the song, we would just know it's an option, because it fits well with the rhythm and phrasing of that particular section of the music.
also, are you doing the military pattern with the zills on the u2d3? One more thing, your followers might not catch it on the first one, if they are more used to catching the single bump, but they should figure it out by the second one. Make sense?

Re: Hip Up Up Dropdropdrop Cue
Wed, March 18, 2009 - 5:02 PMOk, I'm confused with all the other info here, so I'll just give my take and you can take whatever you like from that. :}
I like to cue the Up2Down3 coming from a totally different move like an Egyptian, where the arms are up. That way, when I bring my arms to shoulder level (the split arms you see in the video don't get used much anymore), it's really noticable.
Also, the hips aren't doing the exact same things as a regular hip bump. They are swiveling forward and up (like in the Egyptian) 2x and then spiraling down in steps 3x, releasing the foot to get that nice drop on the last one. So the feel is very different from the Single Bump, which involves moving your foot fwd & back and bumping up, not as swively as the U2D3.
And like everyone said, it has to make sense with the music.
Hope that helps!

Re: Hip Up Up Dropdropdrop Cue
Fri, March 20, 2009 - 9:15 AMwhat's said above is basically what I do so that's good to know... (including the difference between hip movements, swivel up vs. the single bump)
I will look for a handy video link!
and, not related, usually i do single bumps first and then lead into double bumps, rather than the other way around, for whatever reason...
Thanks! :) -

Re: Hip Up Up Dropdropdrop Cue
Fri, March 20, 2009 - 3:46 PMWendy thanks for the clarification - this one always stumps me but like you say if you know your music you know its an option - check and in my notes!!! Thank you!
Sandi - thanks for your explanation as that helps too - also checked and in my note book!
I must come to the font more often! -

Re: Hip Up Up Dropdropdrop Cue
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 11:32 AMThis is probably impossible to explain in words...but, before I can even get my zills out, can someone explain the timing of the arm movements?? I'm sooo LOST! I know when I tip up on my toes, my right arm sweeps over and back left arm goes out to side...when it's time to do the left tippie toe....arms?? This might be the Reach and Sit.... -

Re: Hip Up Up Dropdropdrop Cue
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 4:55 PMHmmm...I don't know what move you're talking about. -

Re: Hip Up Up Dropdropdrop Cue
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 6:29 PMsorry, got two new moves I learned the same day mixed up. I got the reach and sit/ forward forward drop drop drop mixed up with the one where you step out with right foot (duh) tiptoe while you hip bump same hip, then tip toe left foot, hip bump, step back right flat foot, hip bump, step back left foot flat foot, hip bump....all in a box, no traveling....just moving in a square. then you're supposed to do arm movements...ceeeraaaaazzzzyyyyyyy! While right foot and hip out you're sweeping your right hand over left about upper chest level and right arm comes back over your head (think egyptian), left arm sweeps out to left side...then when you start left side sequence somehow your arms do something really pretty and framing...but, I couldn't describe it if I had a million dollars to win. It's a really pretty move....and then you add your zill triplets and military and I'm just .... scrambled eggs. -

Re: Hip Up Up Dropdropdrop Cue
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 6:42 PMSounds like the double back. My best advice would be to get volume 7 - I don't think I could do it justice in words without images. -

Re: Hip Up Up Dropdropdrop Cue
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 11:26 PMFrom what our instructor says, that move doesn't have a specific cue...it's just kinda one of those where you've really got to know your stuff if you're gonna be able to follow... -

Re: Hip Up Up Dropdropdrop Cue
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 11:42 PMI just don't know how many more drum beats I can learn...Saidi, Malfoof, and all the rest and learning when the "Doum" comes so that I'm prepared for what might come next....yeesh...and Bek just told me I MUST learn to sew!!?? Why can't I just win the lottery, hire all those Etsy geniuses to fix my costumes, hire a drummer to teach me, go to ATS workshop classes, and have the IQ to learn all of this...
Irony warning.....I'm an American Sign Language Interpreter by day...you'd THINK, I could even get triplets on my zills???? naaaah.... -

Re: Hip Up Up Dropdropdrop Cue
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 11:55 PM*giggle*...that was kind of a tongue in cheek kinda thing, Etta...you don't absolutely have to learn to sew...it just comes in handy... -

Re: Hip Up Up Dropdropdrop Cue
Thu, April 9, 2009 - 4:42 AMYeah, just make friends with someone who can sew ;) I'm the only one in my troupe who sews, and everyone suddenly becomes extra nice to me when we need new costumes for a performance. lol
