Galbeya? [cross post]

So I've been invited to this big deal event which is being organized by some non-tribal belly dancers. I will be the only or one of very few Tribal Style dancers at the 5-day event. Part of the event is a hafla and I've been told to bring my galbeya and hip-scarf. I asked if I could wear my Tribal gear and the reply was no, it's not a costume thing, it should be a galbeya/caftan and hip scarf. I feel so ignorant but I have to ask -- At is a galbeya/caftan standard Tribal gear? I KNOW a fake-coin hip scarf isn't. What do you all wear to haflas?

P.S. Part of the event is an award ceremony and I've been nominated! You can read more about that in my blog. Vote for Sharon!

But more important, help me figure out WHAT to wear to this hafla!

This makes no sense. If they know you are a tribal dancer, why would they expect you to wear a Galabiya and a hip scarf? And Its not a costume thing? What do they think a Galabiya is? I wear one as after-stage garb.

I was just going to say, a Galabiya is really just the same as a kaftan, no? This really doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Actually, there is a difference. A Kaftan is a big airy cloak kind of thing while a Galabiya is like a long, somewhat fitted dress.

Here is a lady in a unflattering galabiya.

Aww I can't see the Shira pic, it says it's forbidden.

Every hafla I've performed at, I wear my usual ATS gear. Sometimes I tone the makeup down a bit. Or go with just a choli, no coin bra. Maybe they have some kind of group number in mind and want everyone dressed the same? Or it's a theme night and everybody has to wear folkloric costume? I have no idea why they'd do this. And Valizan's right, of course it's a costume thing. How well do you know the host? What would happen if you showed up in the appropriate costume to your dance and NOT a galabeyah?

Maybe they just want you to be completely covered when not performing, right? A kaftan would would work well--- Ihave a black gauze one that I love cuz it covers up everything and its button front. got it on ebay for like 10 bucks. I sure as hell wouldnt go shuck out big $$ for a ghalibeya---dems expensive!

I wonder if they want to do something where everyone dances wearing roughly the same outfit so you can see how they differ beyond costuming but movement-wise, or how you can see the same things happening in different styles no matter what is the costuming.

I'll admit, I'd pack my tribal basics just in case!

Okay, first of all, thank you all so much for confirming my reality. I don't understand why all the dress codes for this event, and not just for the hafla. For the parade - jeans and sneakers; for the gala - long formal dress and jewelry; for the hafla - galbeya and coin scarf; for the contest (I'm a judge, I'm not dancing) - cocktail dress. And okay, I don't have ANY of this! I don't even wear jeans! I'm gonna have to buy a whole new wardrobe just to attend this event. :-D

I am dancing in the gala and for that, at least, I get to wear my own costumes. Trouble is, I'm the only one invited, not my troupe members. What does a tribal dancer do without her tribe? But that's another post altogether.

Something that was suggested on another tribe is a gahwazee coat, pantaloons, and tassle belt. Very similar to what they're asking for but still Tribal. I like that idea but I don't have a gahwazee coat and I don't THINK I have time to order one because shipments take 4-6 weeks to get here. Anyone know where I can get (buy and download) a pattern for a gahwazee coat online?

I have one up free on my website but it's VERY OLD...
      costuming.durrahbellydance.com/Gh...pdf

The original is still up here: www.geocities.com/tala571/ghawazee.html

(it's seriously embarrassingly old, I think I made that in like 1998 when I was mainly tribal dancing in the SCA.... I turned it into a PDF last year and have been meaning to redo this pattern completely for quite some time.)

Thanks Durrah! I had actually already printed it. Found it in an old thread in the costuming tribe.

So if I use this pattern, what do I need to know? What do I need to adjust? Will it actually make a decent coat?

Yeah it works just fine, it's just very quickly and sloppily drawn up lol. If you have trouble making it, you can email me (durrah AT durrahbellydance.com) and I'll help you out. It's really not as difficult as you might think to make a Ghawazee coat, if you've done any sewing before and get your measurements correct. There's not much to them in a basic form, though they can get lovely and complicated too.

Sounds like you need to hit Goodwill or Savers/Value Village..you can get all items needed such as formal, jeans and cocktail dress for less than $30.

Don't I wish there were such stores here where I live. Alas, the concept of good quality second hand clothing stores does not exist here. I'm going to search my friends' closets :-D
