I understand how the cueing of the calibrated spin from an Egyptian 1/2 turn works.
However, I don't quite understand the cueing from the Basic Egyptian without the turn, such as what you would see after a fade.
On Vol. 7 it appears from a stagger, the leader cues spins from the Egyptian 1/2 turn, then fades with Basic Egyptian, then '2nd leader' does the turns from Basic Egyptian without getting into the 1/2 turn 1st.
The 'mini-performance' prior to the instructional section for Spins shows Megha bringing arms horizontal for 4 counts, then up overhead for 4 counts, then proceeding with spins on next count of 1.
However, in the performance section at the end of the video - 2nd number - quartet dancing to Sout with Spice, after the fade, Megha goes straight into spins without cueing, albeit at a change in the music.
During the instructional section, sometimes Carolena brings arms horizontal for 4 counts, then goes into spins, whereas sometimes she brings arms horizontal for 4 counts, then up overhead for 4 counts, then goes into spins.
Is there a hard and fast rule for this, or is it based upon the music?
Thanks.

Re: Cueing Calibrated Spins without Egyptian 1/2 turn such as after a Fade
Sat, October 20, 2007 - 10:44 AMMostly based on the music, but there is an underlying rule about cueing the spins. So, you get the cue from the 1/2 turns, thats great!
The underlying rule is that if you do the Calibrated Spins after cueing it with the Egyptians and do another 8 cts of Egyptian, everyone should automatically expect to spin for another 8. So, in the case of the fades, the 1st leader cued the spins, then faded for 8 cts, so that the 2nd leader could go right into spins on the "one". The 2nd leader CAN cue the spins, or not. The leader needs to change the movement if they do not intend to spin again after 8 cts.
When you're cueing and listening to music w/8 ct phrasing, you can start the cue on the 1-4 and hold for 4 cts with a standard Egyptian to get to the beginning of the next phrase. Or you can let 4 cts go by and cue on the 5-8, then go right into the spins on the "one" after the cue.
Hope that helps!

That is cool! I had wondered about that when I saw it too.

Mon, October 22, 2007 - 9:22 AMSandi, you are SO good at explaining movement in text. How do you DO that? You should open a website: Ask Sandi or Dear Sandi -- Sort of a Dear Abby for lost and forlorn ATS dancers.
GREAT pic, by the way!

I'm assuming that would only work from Egyptian basic, and not from 1/2 turns, because if you wanted to cue on beats 5 - 8 on a 1/2 turn, everyone would be facing the back and not be able to see the leader, correct? -
