I feel like an idiot. I didn't realize there were two different, but so similar shimmies.
This weekend I got into a discussion with a dancer who dances primarily Egyptian style. She said I was describing the ATS shimmy as a 3/4, but dancing a 2/4.
HELP!!

Re: Is the ATS shimmy a 3/4 shimmy or a 2/4 shimmy??
Mon, March 23, 2009 - 9:02 AMA 2/4 shimmy as I learned it goes up & up higher on the right hip, back to neutral, then up and up higher on the left, back to neutral. I think you can also do a 2/4 shimmy down. The count is similar to a 3/4 shimmy as we do it in ATS, but you don't return to neutral in between hip lifts on one side, just when you switch to the other hip. The 2up 3down step reminds me of this shimmy, at least the first part.
A more cabaret way of teaching 3/4 shimmy is as up, down, up (vs the ATS up, neutral, up, so you pass through neutral to an actually dropped hip), so if you'd learned 3/4 and 2/4 this way, the ATS walking shimmy would seem like somewhere in between the 2. -

Re: Is the ATS shimmy a 3/4 shimmy or a 2/4 shimmy??
Mon, March 23, 2009 - 10:21 AMI was curious if the ATS shimmy is one or the other.
It's somewhere in between?
She is teaching the 2/4 shimmy as (right hip) up, neutral, up.
And the 3/4 shimmy as (right hip) up, down (so the left hip goes up), up.
Maybe I'm trying too hard to break it down. I should just shimmy and shut-up.
But I was attempting to explain it to a non-ATS dancer and just managed to confuse myself!

Re: Is the ATS shimmy a 3/4 shimmy or a 2/4 shimmy??
Mon, March 23, 2009 - 12:16 PMI am by no means an authority on this matter, but I just went to a workshop with Devyani and when Megha did what she called a "shimmy" it looked like a 3/4 shimmy up on the balls of the feet to me. -

Re: Is the ATS shimmy a 3/4 shimmy or a 2/4 shimmy??
Tue, March 24, 2009 - 3:29 PMDefinitely a 3/4 shimmy

Fri, April 17, 2009 - 8:25 AMNot an authority on this? Since when? ;-)
Sara has the most beautiful 3/4 shimmies I've ever seen...but I could be biased, since she's my instructor...:-)

Re: Is the ATS shimmy a 3/4 shimmy or a 2/4 shimmy??
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 12:56 PMYou're running into a language problem, where different dancers learn the same thing but call it different words.
It is similar to what she was teaching as a 2/4 shimmy. It is not the same as what I learned as a 2/4 shimmy, which is much more punctuated as two beats to the right & two to the left, more up-up than up-neutral-up. So it's counted in 2's as well.
It is ALSO similar to the 3/4 shimmy most dancers learn, which is up-down-up, except not going all the way down. When you explain it to non-ATS dancers, you just need to understand which terminology they learned.

Re: Is the ATS shimmy a 3/4 shimmy or a 2/4 shimmy??
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 11:40 AM3/4...Fat Chance never does a 4/4. I just explain that it's like the Gawazhee, but, closer feet, and arms higher up and hands not facing palm up. That's the only way I could figure out the 3/4...go figure. -

Wed, March 25, 2009 - 6:31 PMOoops....I just noticed we were talking about 2/4 shimmies...which I hadn't heard of....very interesting.

Re: Is the ATS shimmy a 3/4 shimmy or a 2/4 shimmy??
Fri, April 3, 2009 - 8:23 PMI call the FCBD 3/4 shimmy my ATS 3/4, as I've learned 3/4 shimmies in several different ways and dance in an area where there is some BD genre crossing so it helps me to keep them all straight. When I took a workshop with Mira Betz last summer she explained 3/4 shimmies in a completely new way that I'm still trying to wrap my brain around. -

Re: Is the ATS shimmy a 3/4 shimmy or a 2/4 shimmy??
Fri, April 17, 2009 - 8:04 AMI was taught that the ats shimmie is the 3/4 shimmy, but there is the 3/4 shimmie on the up or the 3/4 shimmy on the down

Re: Is the ATS shimmy a 3/4 shimmy or a 2/4 shimmy??
Fri, April 17, 2009 - 1:23 PMIt is an up shimmy, although there is also an over-shimmy that is part of ATS as well, but less used.

Re: Is the ATS shimmy a 3/4 shimmy or a 2/4 shimmy??
Fri, April 17, 2009 - 1:30 PMGaaah...I've been trying to get the 3/4 on the down and I can do it a few times, then my hips just seem to want to revolt and go back to the up...it's maddening!!!
