Is the ATS shimmy a 3/4 shimmy or a 2/4 shimmy??

I feel like an idiot. I didn't realize there were two different, but so similar shimmies.
This weekend I got into a discussion with a dancer who dances primarily Egyptian style. She said I was describing the ATS shimmy as a 3/4, but dancing a 2/4.

HELP!!

  • A 2/4 shimmy as I learned it goes up & up higher on the right hip, back to neutral, then up and up higher on the left, back to neutral. I think you can also do a 2/4 shimmy down. The count is similar to a 3/4 shimmy as we do it in ATS, but you don't return to neutral in between hip lifts on one side, just when you switch to the other hip. The 2up 3down step reminds me of this shimmy, at least the first part.

A more cabaret way of teaching 3/4 shimmy is as up, down, up (vs the ATS up, neutral, up, so you pass through neutral to an actually dropped hip), so if you'd learned 3/4 and 2/4 this way, the ATS walking shimmy would seem like somewhere in between the 2.
    • I was curious if the ATS shimmy is one or the other.
      It's somewhere in between?

She is teaching the 2/4 shimmy as (right hip) up, neutral, up.
And the 3/4 shimmy as (right hip) up, down (so the left hip goes up), up.

Maybe I'm trying too hard to break it down. I should just shimmy and shut-up.
But I was attempting to explain it to a non-ATS dancer and just managed to confuse myself!
      • You're running into a language problem, where different dancers learn the same thing but call it different words.

It is similar to what she was teaching as a 2/4 shimmy. It is not the same as what I learned as a 2/4 shimmy, which is much more punctuated as two beats to the right & two to the left, more up-up than up-neutral-up. So it's counted in 2's as well.

It is ALSO similar to the 3/4 shimmy most dancers learn, which is up-down-up, except not going all the way down. When you explain it to non-ATS dancers, you just need to understand which terminology they learned.
