I've been toying with the idea of how to create an FAQ for ATS. Basically, a place where, if someone new to the tribe, or to ATS has a question, they can check the FAQ for links to discussions already started. Make sense?
Well, I started a tribe. Yeah, just what we all need, another tribe. BUT. My idea is to post a link in the description of THIS tribe, but keeping that tribe moderated, so people can view it, but instead of having everyone join and have the ability to post, I'd have people send me sugggestions and links for more FAQ's. OR, I could allow anyone to join, and just be hypervigilant about deleting any thread that isn't an FAQ thread.
Here's the link the the FAQ, and what I've posted so far. If you have suggestions and links for more frequently asked questions, pm me.
tribes.tribe.net/atsfaq
let me know what y'all think!

Re: an FAQ experiment
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 12:16 AMI think you are a brilliant woman (along with Sandi) who should not have to reply to the same goldurned questions over and over again when people should just look it up. And now you have made it convenient. Good on you!
And No, I wouldn't let anyone join and post. You are already hypervigilant on this post, you shouldn't have to work your nuts off (not that you have nuts... oh nevermind...) to provide aid to dancers. :) -

Re: an FAQ experiment
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 9:35 PMOkay, boys and girls, the ATS FAQ experiment is officially underway. I've put the link in this tribe's description, and and am adding new content as time allows. I've invited Sandi to join, so she can help me compile, if she's interested. :-)
At this point, I'm going to restrict membership to the two of us, but please! PM me with suggestions for topics you'd like to see included in the FAQ! -

Re: an FAQ experiment
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 9:55 PMThis is great, Wendy & Sandi!!! Yay! Kudos!!!! I was wondering if instead of links to threads you would consider a cut and paste approach? Perhaps pilfer from those existing threads the fine points you want to share? Since it's a resource/catalog and people are not adding their 2¢ it would be nice and clean. Just a thought. Another thought would be to reference which video the move on in either the subject line along with the name. i know that comes up often in these threads. Thank you for doing this! -

Re: an FAQ experiment
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 10:10 PMThanks for the suggestions, Laurie!
I love the idea of posting links to videos that are referenced.
As far as cutting and pasting discussions, I'll mull that over.
Thanks!

I think its a great idea, Wendy! -

Re: an FAQ experiment
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 12:33 AMIt'd be like an index to this tribe! Cool.

Re: an FAQ experiment
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 12:51 AMThanks!
I like the idea of it being an index of sorts. But it wouldn't necessarily have to be just for this tribe, it could contain links from discussions on any tribe concerning ATS.

Re: an FAQ experiment
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 8:51 PMThat's a great idea, Wendy. I love the idea of guiding querents to an ATS Grand Central Station!
I mean the next part of my post in the nicest way....I hope I am typing in a manner that will reflect my opinion/thought/inflections, etc....
It is my hope that folks who visit the ATS tribe will then read the description of the tribe.............:
["What the initials stand for. American Tribal Style bellydance. Like it or not, it's the foundation for many other styles that consider themselves 'tribal'style.
This tribe is devoted to discussion of American Tribal Style Bellydance, as taught by Carolena Nericcio, founder of FatChanceBellyDance."]
................and understand that THAT is the foundation and basis of the move we are discussing/expaining. I say this because often it seems as though dancers who have never studied ATS (from someone who has ATS experience) will begin a discussion with, "When I learned this move..." or "When my troupe does this move....", and then they go on to describe something that is NOT ATS. They truly seem to be wanting to help the querent, but they are describing THEIR style of Tribal, not ATS.

Re: an FAQ experiment
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 5:25 AMFantastic idea! Can we have each move in the FCBD repertoire have a thread too? Threads related to Egyptians, threads related to Double Back, etc? -
-
Re: an FAQ experiment
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 8:10 AMThat's a brilliant idea, Durrah!
Okay, so, I'm getting membership requests for the new tribe.
My idea originally was to keep it moderated, but not add members, to keep the traffic to a minimum, and have folks either bookmark the tribe, or refer to the header on this tribe for the link. And to have people pm me with links and subjects for faq.
Here's my question-is that going to be too much of a pain for people? should I just let y'all in?
Part of my reasoning was that many people might not want yet another tribe to join.
I could change it to allow members, and be strict about posting as following: The title of the thread is a subject on which there are many questions, and the body of the post is to contain links to discussions, not discussions themselves. I would delete any discussion, as that tribe would be a sort of an index, and as such, I'd like to keep it uncluttered.
Make sense? thoughts? -

Re: an FAQ experiment
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 9:26 AMmy thoughts:
is an option to *watch* it? or is there an option to be a member but not have posting access?
if not, just make it unjoinable and let folks bookmark it. it would be cleaner and simpler in that way. and seriously, like V said, you could probably do without something else to have to monitor... -
-
Re: an FAQ experiment
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 9:31 AMAbsolutely brilliant! I love love LOVE it!!
I would keep it closed to members, actually....I think it would be much less work for you in the long run!
Thanks for putting it together!!

Re: an FAQ experiment
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 10:27 AMI'd prefer it to be moderated and be more of a reference link, rather than a discussion tribe. Besides, all it will be is links to threads already posted here and elsewhere, so if you allow people to join and you post something new there, it will only direct the viewer to a thread they may have already read.
If the FAQ link is posted towards the beginning of this tribe description, I think people will be able to see it (unless they hide all tribe descriptions) and refer to it when they have a question that may already have been answered. Bookmark it, etc. You'll have made their research so much easier. Better than Google, I'd say.
And if people post a repeat question here, it'll be so easy just to copy the link to the links page for that discussion so they can read the archives.
Let me know if you need help finding all those old posts.

Re: an FAQ experiment
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 10:42 AMMy preference would be that it be moderated, that the only people who can post there are ... hmmm ... certified? ... recognized? ... ATS teachers. Discussion tribes are good for other things, and I have learned a lot by reading how Mary in Kansas and Sally in Ontario and Billy in Okanawa do or teach a move. But if this is going to be a reliable source of information on ATS in it's purest form, it should only have input from the experts.
MHO. GREAT idea by the way!!!

Re: an FAQ experiment
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 2:57 PMThis is a fabulous idea. I think reference-only is just fine. I wish someone would do this for Tribal Costuming! (Uh, don't look at me) Every few weeks it seems there's a new thread from someone who wants to know, say, how to make dreadfalls, and doesn't bother searching any of the 50 or so other threads with exactly the same answers. -
-
Re: an FAQ experiment
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 3:35 PMThat's exactly the reason I wanted to do this, Margaret!
So basically, the way tribe is set up, I can't really create an announce-only tribe, so moderating and having people bookmark and just read it is the closest I can come.
So it'll stay moderated, read-only, and a suggestion-since tribe can be so slow (at least until the new release in July, maybe that will make it faster), you might want to bookmark it on your browser, rather than using Tribe bookmarks, you may be able to access it faster. Just a thought. -
-
Re: an FAQ experiment
Sat, May 17, 2008 - 2:35 AMI like the bookmark only tribe idea! I belong to what 63 tribes! But this ATS Archive tribe would be one of those tribes that I would always read, y'know!??!

Re: an FAQ experiment
Wed, June 18, 2008 - 5:04 PMBrilliant Idea. Brilliant woman for doing it! I really like the fact it's a very clean list, very much like an index, rather than being mixed up with people's discussion posts. :) -

Re: an FAQ experiment
Fri, June 20, 2008 - 5:41 AMSadly I have not come up with the funds as of yet to be "certified" and cannot be considered "pure" (in ANY sense of the word. Yet I find this tribe very helpful and would hate to only be invited into the other if I was either cert or pure.
I do hope to be GS cert sooner rather than later but the strictly ATS tribes have really helped me to further the ATS tradition to my students where sometimes we want to put our own spin on things. I would miss out if I couldnt use the reference tribe. -

Re: an FAQ experiment
Fri, June 20, 2008 - 5:49 AMOh hells bells. Nevermind. I just went over and saw that NOBODY gets in and it is just a reference tribe. Duh. Apparently at 5 something a.m. I am not actually absorbing what I am reading. Sorry.

Disregard.

Re: an FAQ experiment
Mon, June 23, 2008 - 3:39 PMA portion of a quote if I may cuz i am lazy and she said sort of what i wanted-- K-Leee said "but the strictly ATS tribes have really helped me to further the ATS tradition to my students"...
TOTALLLY!!!
I know ATS is second nature to those who dance it under the tutelage of rightful teachers day in and day out-- but there sure is a bunch of questions that pop up when experimenting and working through it yourself ( my GST is in August! YIPP!)
So to Sandee and Wendi ( and those that also impart their wizened info to us greenies who love the dance!!!!!) I LOVE YOU, MA`AM's!!!!!!
( not to discount Valizan either-- Please include " MAN " in above exclamation)
Seriously-- you grrls rise above and beyond and we salute you!
