Ok, where have I been all this time that I didn't know about the magic that is Sahra by Khaled?????
I can't stop listening to it! (and Aicha too, the people near me at work are going to be SO sick of the two songs by the end of the day)

my question, does anyone know of any youtube clips where Sahra is used? I looked for a FCBD one and couldn't find anything. I'm looking for pure FCBD ATS btw. I'd like to see how troupes have interpreted the song.

Thanks!!
now back to my Sahra trance

I would LOVE To see a clip! I want to see at what preferred point FCBD does the Sahra. I've seen it in workshops but didn't write it down. If there's no clip, does anyone know where the move is executed? It seemed like there was a certain spot in the song (phrase or wording) where it took place....or if there is no special place at all :) Is that all just in my head?

      Its when he sings "Sahra" that you start the Sahra Turn. And it moves fast, so there's no dilly dallying. ;}

I love this song. But you know where I get hung up? That the song is kinda fast-ish. When we danced to it at the GS, I got to really see Carolena and Megha's mental process with moves and where they were into this song, but it took some time for me to wrap my head all the way around it, and I still go "huh" sometimes. But like Diana, I had no idea where the move went in, as far as the song itself went as I was dancing and not taking notes at the same time :)

So, with regards to the lyrics (let me know if this is right, Sandi)

Hadi hobbab il leela rani andihom waah
Nebghi adoo yaay adma wedali gowwedeh waah
Nebghi adoo yaay yama weedoor fizzeneq waah
Willi gharou minna eedirou keefna waah

        (Move starts here)
        Sahra (Saaaaaaaahraaaaaaaaa, very drawn out)
        bled irramla
        sahra
        bled il temra
Sobri sobri ya layli taay farraj rabbi

Ma tebki matshafeeni konti tkhemmi waah
Aayit feek nsa3ef hatta raayeetinif waah
La3bou beek oo biya issil3a inneksa waah
Ki ma bekeeteeni lyoum gla3ti li lihmoun waah

        (Move starts here)
        Sahra (Saaaaaaaahraaaaaaaaa, very drawn out)
bled innakhla, sahra bled il tamra
Sobri sobri ya layle taay farraj rabbi

Yes, but you have to cue just before he says "Sahra" so you can get the arm swooping up and overhead for that quick turn Sahra moment. The right arm floats down for "bled irramla", then the second turn happens at the next Sahra, following thru during "bled il temra". Hope that makes sense.

got the Aicha one. I was showing it to my class last night.
that's what started me on my Khaled addiction ; )

now, I know Sahra is supposed to be performed as a dramatic slow, but I can't totally wrap my brain around that. I want to use it as a fast song and then stop to change to slow at certain points in the song, like when he starts singing Sahra.

I, too, have a hard time seeing Sahra as a slow. It just doesn't feel right to me. But to each their own, and FC has had great success with it and it feels good to them! Aisha I love!

I interpreted the choice of slow moves for this song as a way of dealing with the fact that the tempo is kind of 'medium'; it's too slow for the truly fast moves so they made a deliberate choice to use slow moves instead. *shrug*

When you think of the WHOLE song, like a whole picture, with the slow areas where the music drops out, etc, yes, you can interpret it a "slow" song. For sure. It's just one of those kind of alluring songs that you can't make a call on right away. It begs to be listened to, and listened to, and really (mentally) crawled inside. It's not so much one of those, "Oh! Yeah! BOOM!" songs, it's more a thinker.

It's a wonderful song. We're actually dancing to it on July 31st, with a "dueling duos" set up. Diana had suggested it the other night because she looooooooooooooooooooves this song. It's good stuff :)

For "fast" slow songs, the moves become punctuated and sometimes, certain parts are sped up in order to match up with the pace of the melody. Turns are sped up. This does not make them rhythmic tho. They are just alternative interpretations of the movements.

For the Sahra Turn, he says Sahra twice in the chorus. The first part of the turn goes with the first Sahra phrase. The second turn goes with the second Sahra phrase. There are some parts of the song where it slows down and loses the drums, so you can match up with that too. It just would look too funny if you kept the same uber-slow taxeem pace throughout the whole song.

      I wish we had some video examples. We have many that aren't online, but that doesn't help. ;}

I love the Aisha song. My instructor played it in class and I was like, "OMG what is that beautiful song?" I listen to it a few times a day.

For our GS, Carolena was trying to tell us all something, we were sitting down, ready to take notes, and then Aisha started to play. One by one, I think she could see our brains getting sucked in by that song, so she had to turn it off. She said something funny like, "I can't compete with Aisha." (attention-wise...she said something wittier that I can't quite remember, but it was entertaining!)

Carolena said a lot of witty things and I couldn't help write some of them down :)

I could watch the Ansuya Show clips all day, every day. Seriously.

Anyone ever find out what the name of the first song in the first clip is?

That would be what we call Magreb or Magrebi. It came off of one of the old set tapes. Haven't been able to find it on cd, so Helm is recording it on their next cd. Yay!

Ok, I don't know which is more of a "yay!!!" - that there is a new Helm CD in the works, or that Magreb is on it. :-)
