We have so many festivals around the country....with all kinds of different wonderful bellydance styles. But what about an ALL ATS festival? What would people think of having ATS dancers gather somewhere with FCBD doing all kinds of workshops (and other Pure ATS dancers)? I would love to gather in one place with ATS dancers from all over and dance together. That's one thing about ATS that I love so much...its a common language that we speak no matter where we're from :)

Re: All these festivals...
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 12:46 PMI had a dream one night that I was in my high school gym class, and we were all out on the football field, but all of us were ATS dancers in costume and Carolena blew a whistle and we started doing these incredible drills and ATS "games"!!! And we all knew what to do 'cause we knew the "rules" .
So yes, that would be awesome, I would go for sure! -

Re: All these festivals...
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 12:54 PMATS dreams rock! I had one that involved getting my idea of having an ATS matrix DVD into development and out on the market. (You know, like Shiva Rea's "Yoga Shakti" DVD, it would be a great practice resource.) And then there are the ATS and healing dreams, but that's waay far afield from the topic.
I would love an ATS festival. And maybe if we'd put it somewhere in the middle of the country (heheh) where there aren't tons of festivals, it would be a great opportunity for those who cannot travel a lot. Hmmm.

Re: All these festivals...
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 1:52 PMI just uploaded a pic of the HUGE ATS circle that happened at the Friday Night Party at TribalCon. I ran and got Megha to show her what she has helped spawn at TribalCon and she got all teary eyed. There is usually a big one at TribOriginal too. Onca and I are big believers in getting to have fun dancing to live music at events, not just have show after show.

Re: All these festivals...
Wed, April 2, 2008 - 3:03 PMI think I would personally get a little bored. Not because ATS is lacking, but in the same way I would get bored at an all Turkish event or an all anything event. Having some variety is important. And if there were workshops, since ATS is so strictly codified now, what would anyone teach that someone else didn't already know or utilize?
That said, Cues & Tattoos is an ALL GROUP IMPROV event! Which includes largely ATS, but also offshoots, creating a great balance of workshops and shows. Troupe Hipnotica puts it on--a group led by a former member of FatChance. Check it out!

Re: All these festivals...
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 5:46 AMShay, do you have any idea if Cues & Tattoos will be an annual thing? -
-
Re: All these festivals...
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 11:20 AMOh yes. Already they set a date for next year. Darned if I remember it off the top of my head tho. Maybe they announced it on their site? -

Re: All these festivals...
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 11:28 AMThat sounded like such a great festival, I am glad it will be an ongoing thing! -

Re: All these festivals...
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 7:04 PMIt sounds like you want to see 3 days of nothing but FCBD? Is that what you mean, or do you mean ATS and the off-shoots that it has sprung? -
-
Re: All these festivals...
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 8:05 PMI'd like to see mostly ATS and dancers who dance primarily ATS. I've done a lot of fusion styles and taken many many workshops with some of the best fusion dancers. So..not just FCBD. I'd love to see BSBD, inFusion, Red Lotus...Devyani.....all those wonderful ATS dancers.....and ITS, too. But Cues and Tattoos looks awesome! Looks like something I'll plan on doing next year. -
-
Re: All these festivals...
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 8:08 PMI'll be there next year too and maybe......dare I say it.....performing with my girl doing our ATS thang!!!???? (she doesn't know it yet.....>:0)
-
Re: All these festivals...
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 8:38 PMThanks for including us in your wish list! :)
This is exactly what Cues & Tattoos is! But we aren't ATS, nor is BSBD (tho they are ATS based/inspired--what group improv bellydance isn't?). But all are based in group improv (what some call ITS, I call Tribal Group Improv or TGI), so this is right what you are asking for!! It's soooo awesome this event is happening! And next year promises to explode!! -

Re: All these festivals...
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 8:44 PMYou are assuming that everyone agrees that only FCBD is "ATS"
I'm not always good.... -
-
Re: All these festivals...
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 8:49 PMNope...not assuming that at all. I've read the discussions about that ATS issue and how it's defined. Like you...I'm not always good either :)
-
Re: All these festivals...
Thu, April 3, 2008 - 8:59 PM'Tis true. But I think ATS based (or inspired) is an excellent compromise, personally. Because isn't that what it is, anyway? Weren't we inspired by ATS by FC and then made it our own?
I like that you're so invested, Chuck. Part-o' why I likes ya! -

Re: All these festivals...
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 7:51 AMCues and Tattoos sounds like it's a great festival. I looked at Troupe Hipnotica's site and found no date for next year. If it's at the same time as it was this year, it is likely I cannot go.
I was wondering if there were any videos taken during this year's festival? I saw the little Unmata clip which was nice - is there more lurking somewhere out there? -
-
Re: All these festivals...
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 10:08 AMNo videotaping was allowed except for an official videographer, and those videos were sold only to the performers. So it is up to the performers to post their own performances if they want (thank the gods!! control over our own work!! :) -
-
Re: All these festivals...
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 11:10 AMI effin' LOVE when festivals have an official videographer or photographer. It means I don't have to hope and pray someone takes a random clip and it winds up on YouTube. Heh. -
-
Re: All these festivals...
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 11:54 AMIts just too bad that official videographers tend to want to get fancy with the zoom & panning and totally miss the action. Oh, to have just the camera centered on the performers and just leave it alone! ;} -

Re: All these festivals...
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 12:46 PMDid you get Adriene's msg today about the DVD from C&T? That apparently it was shot in widescreen, but not everyone has their machines set to be able to watch it in widescreen, so those people will think it was cut off at the edges (we had that problem--thought the edges of our performance were completely cut off!), but actually it's there but just not showing.
In case that was what you were referring to. If not, I return you to your regularly scheduled discussion. -

Re: All these festivals...
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 3:44 PMShay, I got Adriene's email about the dvd after I posted my response, but it wasn't what I was refering to. ;} I haven't even seen our video from C&T yet. I'm just saying that more often than not, we get the videos back that we paid for and are disappointed in some way. But then people who send us videos that they took of us are sometimes better! I'm sure other dancers can agree, we use our videos to document and study moreso than have fancy camera work done.
Alright, back to the topic. My thoughts on an all ATS/ITS festival are about the same as most people listed here. The Cues & Tattoos festival pretty much covered the need for that. An all FCBD ATS "festival" probably wouldn't fly too well, only in that I would feel there'd be too much comparing going on with technique and "are you doing it correctly?" sort of mentality. But an all FCBD ATS weekend gathering would be fun! We've been throwing the idea around for a few years it seems, but scheduling and time constraints have made it difficult to plan. I think it'd be wonderful to offer workshops on all things ATS, have a dance party with our band Helm, and just commune with our sister dancers. Someday, hopefully!

Re: All these festivals...
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 11:13 AMAn official videographer makes total sense. That's cool.
So...erm, performers? Have any footage you'd like to share? :D

Re: All these festivals...
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 12:02 PMYou know Shay, this brings up a good point... Videotaping,,, we have always had an open door policy at Tribal Fest allowing videotaping...
I think the main reason was that Kajira, when she would dance somewhere, 90% of the time, was un-happy with the "Official" videography...
Didn't get the whole troupe, sound was off, couldn't hear the zills, and so on. And all she ever heard , well not always but a lot was how everyone was ripping on the video guy....
which brings us to ......
As festival promoters, even if we didn't make anything off the videos, it would be us who would be getting the crap from everyone, and to be honest, we didn't want to deal with that.
Also if we had to have one, he would take up space in the hall that another vendor could be, so not only would we not be making any money off him, we would loose income from that vending spot.
So we started Tribal Fest with an "open video policy" We would tell performers that if they didn't want to be taped to have it said before hand in their intro......
But that was all before camera cell phones and YouTube....
So should we stop the "open door videoing?"
Is that what people want? Nobody has ever said anything to us about it... in fact we have gotten more thank you's!
Hummmm.. maybe I should have started a thread about this..... copy and paste time to the BlackSheep Tribe.... -
-
Re: All these festivals...
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 12:51 PMMy take? I like open videotaping! But I don't like people posting the video all over the place without asking the dancers.
So maybe somewhere in the program putting in a large ad that says
"While we allow open video taping at Tribal Fest, there are a couple very important rules to remember:
1) DO NOT VIDEOTAPE PERFORMERS WHO REQUEST NOT TO BE TAPED
Please respect the wishes of any performers or troupes who do not wish to be filmed. This includes any type of video media (video on your phone, video on your camera), not just video cameras
2) VIDEOS TAKEN ARE FOR YOUR OWN PERSONAL USE ONLY
Videos you take at the Fest are considered for your personal viewing. You should not present this video to the public, such as showing it to a class of students, or posting it anyplace online like YouTube, unless you get EXPRESS PERMISSION FROM THE PERFORMERS THEMSELVES."
SOmething like that. Whatya think, Chuck?

Re: All these festivals...
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 11:09 AMI'm pretty sure Diana (not that I speak for her, she does that pretty well on her own) meant "ATS" ... and the off-shoots, ITS... improv tribal, etc. She didn't post this to be offensive, or to insult anyone, and I'm pretty sure she meant well.
I personally think having an "Improv Tribal Dance" type fest, or, one that features it, a bit more, would be wonderful. I'd like to meet other dancers who share my passion for ATS -- and ITS, etc, etc.
I'm kinda thinkin' a "FCBD" festival is already goin' on... it's called "Pura" ... though it's not a festival, and days of workshops, it's ATS dedicated. Which I think is wonderful.
So let's not all get too upset here. Lots of strong personalities and strong opinions in the dance world... it can be hard to not stir one or two of em. And Di wasn't trying to be the bull in the china shop here.
:)
PS: got my Tribal Bible Chuck... can you please thank Kajira for signing it and wishing me a happy birthday, too? That really made me smile!! -

Re: All these festivals...
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 3:07 PMHmm, I've been contemplating whether to respond to Shay's response.
I think C&T (all tribal improv) festival is great. I went and had a wonderful time. I plan to go next year. I've also been chatting with Adriene about having a little open dancing for ATS dancing to bring the sisters together.
I also think having a FCBD-ATS-oriented festival would be fantastic. Seeing that they are the originators, someone else really can't come up with a festival and sponsor/host something calling it a FCBD-ATS festival. However, if we could convince Carolena & the FCBD gals to dedicate a weekend for all of us to "come home" and celebrate...
One of the things I love about FCBD-ATS is that we have a common vocabulary. I'm not interested in watching troupe after troupe perform FCBD-ATS. Of course, I could watch FCBD all evening. However, I would love the opportunity to dance with others who have dedicated themselves to keeping FCBD-ATS true and alive.
I know it's painful to bring up the ATS definition. But, I find that (still) so many of my Los Angeles sisters continue to misuse the name. I'm not sure if it's intentional on their part. So, if it's brought up occasionally it might be educational for those, I myself was confused and misused the definition, who my innocently not know. -

Re: All these festivals...
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 4:03 PMm'kay...lemme see if I can put my thought into words correctly...
I would love to see an all ATS festival.
We all use the same vocabulary, therefore we'd be able to dance together confidently. I also think it would be cool to see how each troupe performed by themselves. Since we don't all have the luxury of dancing with FC regularly, the moves will likely take on subtle differences, and each troupe is bound to have their own spin on how to combine the steps, I watch Devyani performances on youtube and can see differences, and I know I see differences in my own troupe...even though we are all performing the moves as we were taught. -

Re: All these festivals...
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 5:53 PMI think what you guys are asking for is less of a festival and more of a conference...and your wish may be coming true verrrrry soon! Tribal Village....heard of it? If you haven't you will soon! And I agree, it would rule to have a gathering to commiserate and play with other ATS dancers! -
