Pivot Bumpin' And Sumptin'...

So I'm here enjoying FCBD Volume Seven and Ms Carolena is talking about doing the single bump pivot turn. She says it is part of the pivot bump family.

Is the Pivot bump family part of the Choo Choo family? Because her single bump (hip goes front and back) without the turn looks like a single choo choo (hip goes front and back). What is the difference between the two moves?

And anyone care to share how this would be cued? I can't tell watching the wonderful Colette on the DVD. It isn't a simple head turn again, is it? I'd think that would cue a smaller turn, no?

The choo choo (to my understanding) is part of the pivot bump family; it's a single up hip. The pivot bump is a hip to front and back, which can turn on its spot or be set up for a half turn if done in a sequence with double pivots in between. I don't own Vol 7, so don't know if the movement or setup have changed since I learned it so many moons ago.

the pivot bump is the single hip bump, pivoting around yourself. a choo choo is pivot bumps going continuously in one direction. a single bump is determined by the foot position during the hip bump. one bump with the ball of the right foot placed next to the toes of the left foot, and the second bump with the ball of the right foot positioned next to the heel of the left foot.

and the '1' on the pivot bump is counted on the lift of the hip, as opposed to the drop.

so the double bump, single bump and choo choo are all part of the pivot bump family.

the closest thing to a cue for the single bump half turn is a more emphatic gesture of the hands and arms. it's something you learn to recognize as you become more familiar with it.

I'm sure one of the FC teachers will chime in soon, but as I understand it (and as I teach it, so I hope I'm right) the difference between bumps and choo choos is that bumps are stationary or turning and choo choos travel. In the basic (pivot bump or choo choo) the hip just moves up and down, accent on the up. In the Singles the hip moves front and back, and in the doubles the hip does front-front-back-back. Each variation has it's different arm positions, of course.

Although Carolena doesn't talk about a cue in the video, she does mention that you set it up with the Single Pivot Bump. (But it doesn't look like Colette does that at the beginning of the segment, it looks like it's coming out of the Double Pivot Bump.) What it LOOKS to me like Carolena does to "cue" the move is this subtle lift of the whole body on what would be the back bump just before swinging the hip to the front-left corner. She doesn't mention it as a cue, but she does it pretty consistently.
