Student Troupe Question

Those of you that are in a student troupe, how often do you practice together? In my situation, we have class for 1.5 hour 1x a week and we had student troupe practice every other Sunday for 3 hours. Recently, the troupe practice was cut back to 1x a month for 3 hours. At the same time, everyone that was in the student troupe was also in a mixed level class that has now been split into two different level classes. The opportunity to all dance together is 1x a month. There are only about 10-12 people in total in the troupe and originally in once mixed class. I am looking for some feedback and what works for other troupes as well as mixed level classes.

One other question, how long is it recommended for one to dance (take lessons) before joining a pro troupe? And once joining a pro troupe, should one drop out of the student troupe?

Thanks. jms

In my situation, we have a few students who are interested in having a student troupe. I imagine as far as practice amounts that is determined by how often you'd be performing. If it's only occasionally, then fewer practices a month should be sufficient however I personally feel once a month is not enough, even for student troupes. As far as how long one is taking classes before being in a pro-troupe will be determined by the skill level of the student. Each person is different as far as how long/short it takes that person to learn how to dance. I've known some students who after five years were still not ready for pro-troupe status, whereas some both former and current were ready after nearly 2 years. It all depends on how fast or slow you pick up the moves and how fast you learn to be graceful. Some students know the moves but don't have the grace down. Some do, there really is no time limits. To reiterate, I know of a famous dancer who nearly quit belly dance because it took her so long to get things down. But she persisted and now she's famous and so utterly skillful at what she does after many years of hard diligent practice.

Just my opinion, but you might be better served to dance together 1-1/2 hours, twice a month, rather than 3 hrs x 1. Three hours is a long time to dance straight through, and personally, I find I get a bit burned out and ADD-ish after the 2 hour mark. That is a lot of dancers, and not a lot of time to become familiar with your troupemates' individual quirks. The more familiar you are with each other, the more in synch your dancing will be. Once a month is not very much time- twice would be much better. If you are really serious about it, weekly is better than that.

As far as when one should think about joining a pro troupe, obviously that would vary according to ability. I recall some of the Fat Chance girls saying it was several years before they ever got on stage, and I took that to mean in a non-pro troupe. But: I recently met two of the girls from Tribal Moon, and they had amazing dancer-to-dancer communication and talent, and I believe one of them had only been dancing ATS for 1-1/2 years or so, but she was some kind of freak of nature (in a good way). I would think one should have 5 or 6 years of serious consistent study before going pro. You need to be really honest with yourself about your ability and experience- there are a lot of mediocre dancers out there who are perfectly competent, but aren't exceptional either. And (again, only my opinion) they should stick to a student troupe- there is a lot that can be done within that category.

Hi there. First, thank so much for th Tribal Moon kudos. I completley agree about the time between begining ATS instruction and taking the stage as pro or otherwise varying greatly. I began studying ATS in San Jose in 2007, another of the troupe members started a few months later and a third another several months after that. All of us have strong backgrounds in dance &/or martial arts. 2 of us began dancing with TM in March of 2008, the third started some time after TF08. That said, we study hard!!

I took begining classes twice a week, added a level 2 class and was attendng troupe rehearsal 2x a week for 2 hours sometimes a third rehearsal for about that same length, this doesn't include practice time at home. With this intensity, we really connected and developed as a troupe. There are now 2, 2hr. rehersals/week (not everyone can make each, but we have one "mandatory" day a week) in addition to at least one class/week. A couple of us can get up to FC for further classes during the week (sadly, I can't). I absolutley feel the very marked difference between attending Wed. & Thurs. rehersals weekly vs. just one of those and if I could juggle it w/ the family & kids, I'd be dancing w/ my ladies (in rehearsal or classes) at least 4x week.

I guess I'd say, for our troupe, we absolutley prefer the feeling of more sessions per week. We start to konk out after 2hrs. straight dancing and we take a class 1x weekly(on average), minimum. The more there are of us, the more need there is for increased frequency of dance time together. We also find that periods of lots of time together (Like say, several months of it) serve as a sort of "tune up" if you will. Making a less intense schedule possible, w/out greatly sacrificing quality, in stretches - but this is still not ideal. For me, 1x month would never cut it. We would see too much of our connection slip and that connection is paramount. I hope this helps. I imagine it can be very challenging to coordinate so many schedules in such a large troupe. You might consider setting aside more 1.5/2 hr. rehersal times per month and then making one or two "mandatory". That way, the dancers can meet in varying combinations, have practice time together and then you all know you will meet en mass for the "uber-rehearsal". Maybe have a google cal. set up so you know who can make which dates and no one is left on their own.

      Good luck to you!

Mine is two hours every friday evening. Though our troupe is fairly informal, as it's a college troupe and most of us have other classes and such so there are only a few who show up every week. Although we do perform for homecoming every year so when it gets close to that time, Kristi (our Mama Belly) will up the hours to make sure we have the choreography down. Our troupe is also about 10 members, half being more experienced and the others are newer. For our performances we usually do three pieces, one for experienced, one for novice and one for Mama Belly's solo. But we all practice together.
