More headwear questions

I've been thinking about this for awhile, and the Turban thread reminded me to post it.

In the FCBD Vol. 2 DVD about costuming, instructions are given for turbans only. Obviously that isn't the requirement anymore - we see buns, flowers, hair sticks, etc. all the time now. So I am wondering - is there a standard for the other decorations? If you aren't wearing a turban, do you have to have a bun? If there are flowers, is there a minimum amount?

I think we'd all agree that just wearing your hair down wouldn't be appropriate - so what are the rules or guidelines to use if you aren't wearing a turban?

And to add to that - what things CAN you put on your head? Kuchi jewelry, hair sticks made of natural materials, flowers. . . but not a sequined headband (not that I'd want to!). Is there a do/don't list, even unofficially?

You know... I don't know if there really are "rules" about hair -- I think it's a given that the "look" of ATS involves hair, up, which (I think) Carolena once said, she felt "Brought the whole look together". But I do think there's room to experiment now. Give yourself some time to look around at photos of other ATS dancers. Watch some videos on YouTube, and see what would work for you.

And I don't know if there's really a maximum or minimum when it comes to flowers -- for me, personally, the more the better. I have short hair, and I need more decor. So it's really personal preference, you know?

I think that not only does having the hair up bring the look together, but it shows the lines of the neck and back so well when you are dancing.

Actually, there is a rule (sort of) about having hair up. Hair down can obscure cues or gestures that give information to the followers, and it can get in your way when you're dancing-you don't want it flying in your face while your spinning, or in anyone else's, for that matter. Sometimes we've done long braids, with height and adornment up top, but braids can be problematic, hitting people during turns and spins. .

As far as a list of hair do's and don'ts, there isn't really one. You want to balance out the size of the costume, so bigger is good-I have short hair right now, and have a hairpiece that adds bulk. No rule about buns or whatnot, it's whatever is stable, flattering, and works. As far as adornments, there's no required number of anything. Just use your judgment about what fits with the aesthetic of the ATS costume.

We generally do test our 'do's before we go onstage-jump up and down, and spin to see if anything is going to fly out. It's a good test in general for costuming, too.

My troupe doesn't require a turban, but we have to wear at least one scarf on our heads along with all the other dealibobs. But it can be a long narrow one twisted into a rope; doesn't have to cover our head much.
