Megha does it best - she talks about really thinking about a wet dog, shaking itself off from nose to tail, and does a little shake/the wet dog while she does it. So cute!

I've heard the wet dog analogy but is there another visualization out there? Is it like a body wave with shimmies above and below? Is it shoulder shimmy on 1 and arabic type shimmy on 2?

I am so not sure if I am doing it right.

I believe it's a shoulder shimmy over an Arabic as you step off with the right foot, with the shimmy moving down to the hips as you complete the movement and step off on the left foot.

Wet dog is an alternating shoulder shimmy that flows down to the hips via an undulation as you step, flat-footed, on each beat.

So, you're saying it starts at the shoulders each time you step with either foot, is that correct?
I've gotten conflicting information from two teachers, and I can't tell from the video; it's a little hard to see the feet and at what points the hip shimmy comes into play, and the shoulders look like they're going through the entire step.

Yes, each step has a new undulation starting at the shoulders. And the shimmy should travel through, but not linger in each part. The hips come in as you are getting ready to take your next step.

Yay! Thanks for the visual. That was awesome. We'll see if it gets the seal of approval next time I'm your way! I love your new profile pic!

    (Hi Joan!!!)

Something I sort of discovered about the Dog on Sunday, and yes it may be sort of cheating, but you know that little step-kick motion of the feet--right step, left brushes through and kicks forward a little, then left step and the right kicks forward, in alternation?--(am I making sense?)?

On a FORWARD wet dog, that little brush-kick of the foot really helps me get my little hip-shake in there. I don't think it will work for long term perfecting of the step (and backward not at all), but for the moment I'm just trying to keep a steady and not too fast shoulder shimmy going on top, and just tossing in that little wiggle on the foot follow-through. And believe it or not, it does feel like shaking off that last bit of water.

I'm sort of hoping that sticking with that for the moment will help the whole thing become more natural in my body so I won't need the crutch...If anyone else gets what I'm saying but has a more reasonable and understandable way to say it, please jump in! (If anyone who really knows better knows that this is totally illegitimate and I should put a sock in it, please jump in with that too...)

(It was great meeting you guys!)
