My favorite ATS move, is, hands down, the Egyptian. I love the hip movement and what it does to a skirt. I love the face-framing arms. I just love it. But there is one thing I have noticed about this move...

... everyone seems to do it a little (or a lot) different.

When doing the Egyptian, the arms specifically, when they bend do they stay behind the head, or do they bend and come forward? I have been following what I was taught at Pura and what's on the DVDs.... and that's arms behind the head, framing, not blocking. Is that right?
Hello!

I learned the ASWAT (Arabic Shimmy with Arm Variation and a Turn) step at the General Skills in B'ham last April (2007). Tried to bring it back to my class, and we we go the ASWAT part down fairly well, but when I tried to remember the fade, I mucked it all up, and we we just have been using ASWAT on it's own. Of note, when trying to do the fade at the G.S, I totally CRASHED into someone since I was trying to travel and turn (which is wrong!), that should have been my first clue that I didn't understand the fade quite right!

Nearly a year later, at TribalCon 2008 I am reminded of the ASWAT with a fade by the lovely Megha of Devyani, and I GET IT. I understand it, and can do it, so I feel confident about trying to reintroduce it to my students last night.

What a hard subject to try to teach!

I try counting. I try demonstrating with a student that attended TribalCon and tend to pick up following fast (thanks Laura!)

Lots of blank stares. Lots of glares. Lots of "I can't follow that, I don't see the cue" (even after it had been explained and shown). One lady actually left class for awhile because she was so frustrated.

This is such a beautiful step and I know it is hard to grasp the fade, but it shouldn't be this hard to teach! I am going to bring my Volume 7 to class to show it to those who have never seen it 'in action', and I intend to just bring this step out ever week this month to practice (it was ALL we did for about 45 minutes last night, and THAT WAS HARD on me!) but I am wondering if anyone has suggestions on how to best teach this??

Any suggestions are welcome!

I am working on the list of beginning movements--and hit a snag almost immediately. (I've only been studying tribal about 6 months). On the list was "choo-choo" (we have to write the position, number of counts, then describe the move). I did so, explaining the moves/arm position of a single choo-choo. Two down on the list was "single choo-choo." Huh? Is there a difference between a choo-choo and a single choo-choo? I am going to try to finish my cards on my lunch hour, so immediate input would be enormously appreciated. . . .

Lovely dance space, peaceful surroundings, area to do drumming and dancing by the fire at night - just PERFECT!!! And retreat meaning, no scheduled workshops, just dance and girl time. :O) I would be more than willing to organize the retreat for not much more than actual cost of reserving the dance space. Attendees would need to also pay for their own lodging and meals (delicious vegetarian meals!). Really, I'm not looking to make a profit... just wanting to get a bunch of us ATS dancers together to just *enjoy* each other and the dance. So, what say you? Hmmmmm??

In the past, whenever we "officially" perform, we set up something for the end so we know what to do. But we have had instances when, just for the fun of it, we're doing some improv to a random piece that we don't know thoroughly so sometimes the end catches you by surprise. What do others do?

How much officialness is there to the costuming aspect of ATS? What pieces are considered required in a costume to call it an ATS-appropriate costume, if there are any requirements? I know that ATS and tribal style in general has a specific, non-tangible look that you can point to and say, "that's tribal style", but I'm wondering if those who head up the powers that be of ATS have any kind of requirements in the costuming. Can the costume only, and not any of the moves, mean that your act is out of ATS and into Tribal Fusion?

I'm only asking out of curiosity because the other day I saw a FCBD video in which one of the dancers (and only one) was wearing a white choli, and I thought, "neat, I haven't seen that before." And that got me thinking about how cool it could look to do an entire tribal-style costume in white -- white dreads, white cowrie falls, white top, white skirt, white make up, and lots and lots of tribal metal ornaments. Then I thought...wait, would that be too far away from traditional ATS garb that I've seen?

I'm just realizing how looooong it takes to build an ATS group of ladies from scratch!! Since there is no one else in my area teaching true ATS (or any strictly improv variation thereof), I started teaching about a year ago. I had learned bits and pieces from teachers who mostly used the steps in their own choreographies, and one teacher who taught lead/follow improv as a portion of her classes. Then I bought the videos and set to work learning all I could that way, and also attended Tribal:Pura. I have such a respect for the dance form!!!

Anyhoo, doing some lead/follow improv with a troupe I used to dance with, there were a couple of AH-HA moments - I'm sure you know what I mean! All of a sudden things were flowing and the improv took on a life of it's own and we were **connected**. It lasted only a little while, but spurred me on to pursue ATS. I eventually quit the troupe to devote all my dance time to learning and teaching ATS (the troupe rarely actually practiced the improv - and so just the couple ah-ha's). I'm signed up to take both GS & TT in Milwaukee in November.

So, a year into teaching, I'm just beginning to realize how long it takes to build a group of truly connected ATS dancers. I can see why teachers often rely on choreographies - the instant gratification, not only for their students but for themselves as well. Sometimes I just want it all to come together NOW! Sometimes I just want to teach a choreo, then I have to remind myself that it would only hamper my ATS efforts in the long run.

Sooooo... any thoughts... any encouragement you can offer would be much appreciated. :O)

Several of my students who have been with me for the entire year are now going to join me for extra practice every other week for 3+ hours. We'll be starting in a couple weeks; I'm very much looking forward to that! They are already beautiful dancers and we enjoy dancing together very much, but then I think about how much further we have to go yet... I know, just relax and enjoy the journey! I *do* enjoy the journey, it's just sometimes... you know...

So consistently that I can pretty much see it coming, and do the step incorrectly along with her, if need be. This isn't too tragic in the classroom where nobody's looking, but it doesn't help her (the teacher has corrected her a number of times, but it doesn't take), but she just did it at a public performance, and it really threw off the third person in the trio, who didn't know what the hell was going on.

So, my question is this: is it fair to ask her to not try to lead this step until she can consistently do it the right way? I know I get to my lead and sometimes freeze up or give the wrong cues myself, as I'm sure we all do initially.

OR: do I, along with the other dance partner, go ahead and do the step this leader is actually cueing, so at least I'll be in synch with the third dancer, or do I try to follow the leader, even though she's wrong? Opinions?

(plus belts and tassels and all the fun stuff!!!) but I wasn't sure if they are required or just typical? If they are I guess I need to get cracking and brave the machine and 4 yards for a pair of them!!

Thanks!!

He talked about the difference between folk tradition, which is handed down verbally and evolves with each retelling, and a classical tradition, which has been codified and written down and is handed down somewhat strictly in the same way from then on.

It made me think of ATS' evolution in recent years: coming from bellydance, which is a folk tradition; and today being strictly codified to mean one very specifically documented form and format...is it becoming a classical tradition? Will dancers one day claim being "classically trained in American Tribal Style?" Will it become like ballet, where it will be a given that one must study the roots first, much like dancers usually begin in classical ballet as the roots of moving out into jazz and modern dance? What is happening today, and how will it affect ATS 10 years from now?

From the description on the FCBD videos (if I'm picking it up correctly), the arm above the active hip pulls back (e.g. step R and bring up R hip, while R arm pulls straight back behind the head). But the other hand also seems to be doing something--twisting so the back of the hand is to the audience and coming ever-so-slightly forwards. Am I seeing that right? Other troupes do a "both arms pull straight out to the sides" but I don't think that's what Carolena was describing on the videos... Any suggestions?

What up peeps,

In print, on videos, and in descriptions of ATS people always mention that one of the major influences of ATS, aside from Flamenco, is Kathak.

I study Bharatanayam, and granted am not an expert in Kathak (although I've seen oodles of it performed and have read up extensively on all of the major classical Indian dances), but I think I know enough to spot any sort of Indian dance influence in something, and fail to see any Kathak influence in ATS... unless one counts the Indian prayer FCBD uses. But one step does not a "major" influence make!

Where did this Kathak thing come from? Nearly all ATS groups that I know of (including the one I used to be a member of) mention this in their blubs, and I don't know why (maybe just 'cuz FCBD used it as part of their original description, so people just followed along?).

I'm not against fusion- all I do now is pretty much world fusion, and I think it would be kickass if Kathak really was a major part of ATS. I guess I just want things to be clear, so outsiders get an accurate perception of what's going on in a particular performance or dance form.

I know that Megha studies Odissi, and she's been a major force in ATS lately, so perhaps at this point more Indian stuff has made it into the ATS culture (I haven't done ATS hardcore for a couple years, so sadly I am out of the loop). But... even then, Odissi is different than Kathak.

Again, I'm not trying to put down ATS or anything like that, it's just something I've wondered about ever since I began my studies in Bharatanatyam. I just honestly don't know where the influence of Kathak is in ATS. But maybe I'm missing something??

Any ideas?

Peace,
Dani :)

I was wondering if any of you lovely gals had any helpful tips on mastering the taxeem. I have been struggling with this move for a while, I have no problems with the maya, but whenever I try to do the taxeem my brain and hips seem to battle against each other and I end up doing a Maya, even when I'm trying really hard not to - how on earth that happens I have no idea. It seems my muscles are not prepared to memorise this move, no matter how many times I stand before a mirror to make sure my hips are going the right way, chanting aloud, "bend the knee, slide the weight, bend the knee, slide the weight", and my butt seems determined to stick out. Is it just a case of drill, drill, drill???
I've been digging ATS dancing a whole lot.

My knees, however, not so much.

I have a mild case of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, so stuff likes to dislocate easily. That's part of the problem.

So I'm wondering if there are good exercises any of you do to strengthen or improve your knees (range of motion, prevention of pain, etc.)? Inquiring minds want to know.

(And I'm not doing, nor do I want to do, any Turkish drops, Brice-drops or anything anywhere near that. I do, at times, do yoga poses like the camel and a modified hero during which I'm on my knees.)

Thanks in advance.

So my question is this: Where in Rajasthan did the inspiration come from? What tribe, if any? What dance form in Rajasthan? I'm getting into Indian studies, and I'm curious what bits of India have been modified for ATS.
This may be a Carolena question, but I figured others might also be interested in the answers.
So in volume four, Carolena teaches the double choo choo arms with the arms quite high. When the right hip is bumping forward, the right arm is pulled back , framing the face and the left arm is slightly forward. When the right hip bumps back, the right arm is pushed slightly forward and the left arm is pulled back behind the head. Make sence?????

But in recent performances I have watched of FCBD the arms are different. When the hip bumps forward, the right arm is still back framing the fance, but the left arm comes down to shoulder height. When the hip bumps back, the right arm comes down to shoulder height and the left arm is pulled up and back.

Which is right?!?!?!?! I've been practicing the second way for six years now (arm down to shoulder height)! And since it's done that way in recent performances, that;s what I'm assuming is correct. :/
That is an awful lot. Is this just the going rate for all FCBD shipping now? When I bought volume 1 I think I paid closer to $8 or $10. I checked e-bay and there are older (cardboard envelope) versions available that may or may not play in some DVDs. The price is right, but I'd rather just pay the $25 for the newer version.
Teaching my level 1 (baby belly ats) in class this week, and we were working on 3 person formations which some of the girls had only done 1 or 2 times. It is so great to see the baby bellies out there, trying to figure out how to lead, remember the steps, transition on the right count (that is a lot to try to get right!) and frequently apologizing for 'doing it wrong". After we were done dancing, one girl in class was trying to encourage another, and saying how "we will follow you whatever you do, so don't worry about 'doing it wrong'" (Love that!) and as we were getting ready to cool down, she also said something about our dancing:

"See how cool this ATS is?? Dancing with a hundred women was amazing!" (paraphrasing but this is the jist of it)

She was referring to the fact that she had attended TribalCon and she got up and participated in the Hafla dancing on Friday night were we had a HUGE circle with everyone doing some form lead and follow of Tribal, with a huge emphasis on the ATS steps.

This made me very happy :)

I was rewatching Volume 7FCBD and Megha did not address this specifically when she taught it but it looked as if once she started the move with the half turn she continued it without a cue(looking over her right shoulder)until she came back to front and did the move on both sides and changed to something else.. Is it like the Basic Egyptian with the half turn, in that once the leader starts the DB with HT, it continues, not needing a cue until the leader finishes . I hope this is somewhat clear! Thanks in advance for any help, it is a question that has come up in practice. Cindy

When someone wants to take the lead facing the front and leaving the circle, do you always do this on the 5 as in 1234 turn, turn and then face the front on the 5? Or can you finish the cycle of turn turn then step forward and back to 8 counts and face the front on the one beat? Is there any specific move you do to break out of the turn? We noticed on volume 7 Carolena was doing the arabic or finishing the turkish shimmy facing the front.

Recently I have been learning from teachers who incorporate the ATS I'm familiar with with other fusion and solo techniques that has simply been described as "tribal". I myself have an opportunity to teach for the first time, and wish to teach ATS as I learned it, however I know the sources for some things I've learned, especially things I've learned more recently, are not actual ATS vocabulary (but are, obviously still part of a group improv setting).

I guess I need clarification on the "rules" of teaching and under what term I should classify my classes: ATS or ITS?

Thanks!

I am not talking about the actual movements in ATS but about the whole concept of leading and following.

In my beginners class there are always a few people that have done ATS before, so I use them to explain the group formations and leading switches in circle and fade,... but for beginners leading is a real scary subject. How do you get your students ready for leading?

I tried to have like a set combination (i.e. egyptian basic, then go to arabic, then to choo choo and pivot bump and then back to egyptian basic) While they have the security of a vast routine, they have the decision of how long they stay into each movement. Often they make mistakes and go to movements that I didn't mention and then I encourage that to encourage the improv element of ATS. This works quite well I find.

But do you guys have other exercises to improve their leading skills and to explain the different formats to the beginning students?

1 - Scottish Country Dancing - My great great great great grandparents were from Scotland & Ireland (McCarthy), so I would love to learn this as part of my cultural heritage. Plus, it just looks like a good time!

2 - Indian classical dance - Can't pick one, they're all beautiful and unique. I was excited to find a Bharatanatyam teacher in a town one hour away from me (according to a listing on a webpage), but I emailed the person and they haven't gotten back to me, so I think it was a dead listing. :-(
If you're looking at this formation straight on from an audience perspective it seems as if the duet down stage right should have the follower on the left side of her leader, instead of traditionally behind leader's right shoulder so that she is not hidden by the leader and secondary follower.
Wearing shoes for outdoor events, restaurants, clubs, etc. for the beginner who may not be used to having something on their feet if they're used to being barefoot in class. It is a different feeling esp. in spins.

I found an explanation about this on tribe but had a few more questions.

So the arabic 123 is an 8 count movement, consisting out of 2 arabics for the first four counts and 3 chest drops/undulations on 5-6-7 and coming back up on 8.

So the cue for this is 2 arabics with the arms coming down on to shoulder height. I was wondering if these 2 arabics are the two arabics right before the 3 chest drops (so part of the arabic 123, i.e. count 1-4 of the movement) or if they are 2 arabics prior to the arabic 123 so after these 2 arabics you do an aditional 2 arabics part of the movement followed by the 3 chest drops.

Secondly: do the arms STAY down onto shoulder height for the rest of the movement, until you go to a different movement like egyptian basic or something? This seems so, but on the DVD volume 4, the arms are either up or one arm front one arm up so I got confused. Do the arms come back up after the cue.

and last thing: when you turn with the arabic 123 is it a gradual turn? or is there a certain number of times that you do the arabic 123. With the circle step and the torso twist with turn, I remember that it is either 3 or 2 sets per turn, depending if the follower on the left turns 1/3 turn or 1/2 turn during the turn and thought it might be similar for the arabic 123?

Hope this all makes sense, I find it hard to explain myself without showing on video.
thanks

you can do flourishes (isn't on any of the dvd's) by raising your right and and bringing in position 2 and do a quick turn, you can do these as many as you want until you want to either go to a different move (like they do in the video, they shift to a shimmy traveling in the other direction of the circle) or actually taking the lead by making 1.5 turn instead of 1 turn while doing the flourishes.

Hi everybody, more questions I'm afraid. I was wondering if I could have some clarification on the circle step and how many turns you do. On volume 4 Carolena says that you can do either quarter turns or three turns. Our troupe learnt that you do a half turn followed by two quarter turns and that you can do half turns with a partner doing the circle step ( we haven't practised that yet though). We're trying to keep things reasonably simple with not too many variations and I wondered what FCBD currently do whe they turn the circel step. It's such a beautiful move... now we've got the hang of the feet :-)

I have a question about the sequence of this step:

this is what I understand from watching the videos:

first you start with arabic hip shimmies
then you add the half turn step with arms coming front and out to the side. You can do this as many times as you want and can either go to the arabic hip shimmies with arms + flourish

arabic hip shimmies + flourish: you look over right shoulder (you have to be in arabic hip shimmies with half turn and arms to do this) for the first 4 counts and the second 4 counts you make one turn on the spot
QUESTION: can you only do this once, before going to the fade? or can you do this as many times as you want as well? Do you HAVE to go to the sequence of the fade once you include arabic hip shimmies with flourish?

Arabic hip shimmies + flourish + fade: leader steps back on 1 after doing one (or more?) arabic hip shimmies with flourish section
QUESTION: After the fade, can the new leader go to a different movement, or do the arabic hip shimmies + flourish again on the spot OR does she have to do the fade straight back? Can the new leader also go into the arabic hip shimmies with flourish in a circle? IF the new leader fades straight back can the old leader (that is now leading again) go to a different move or does she have to go to the arabic hip shimmies with flourish in a circle?

Arabic hip shimmies + flourish + in a circle:
QUESTION: does there have to be a fade first, or can the leader go into the circle combo right away?

I guess my MAIN question is: When I see this performed on the video it seems always: arabic hip shimmies for 8 counts, then 1 set (8counts) of Arabic H.S. with arms and half turn, then 1 set of A.H.S with arms and flourish, then 2 fades back and front of AHS with arms and flourish and then the AHS with arms and flourishes in a circle. Is it set like that, or could any of them be removed or repeated out of this sequence

With the first one (ASWATcircle) the 2 turns happen on the 5,6,7,8 as the 1-4 is a arabic hip shimmy with turn as preparation. So on the 5-8 you are actually making two spins, how do you come out of this and take front left position? Also I noticed that because the others are still spinning that they end up moving a lot faster than whoever is taking over the lead so they bump in to her :)
Second one: turkish shimmies in a circle: the turns are here on the 1,2,3,4 and on the 5-8 it's turkish shimmies with arms so it is easier to take over lead here, as you are not spinning for the last 4 counts. But I noticed that in videos of Fat Chance people finish the last 4 counts with arabics to take over lead position... how come?

Hmmm, we're a troupe of three and we recently started rehearsing with another troupe of three on an informal basis.

When it's just the three of us and the lead dancer(front left) wants to do a fade she takes one quick step backwards and that's enough cue for the center back dancer to step forward and take the lead. (or vise-versa)

When it's just the three of us and the lead dancer wants all of us to travel backwards she travels backwards an a normal speed and we all follow.

But with this big group that's not working. The two intentions are getting all confused! We're using a basic stagger formation.

Any advice? Are there clearer cues we can be giving? Is this the sorta thing you have to talk about before a performance, "Halfway thru the song I'm going to give Jane the lead by fading back"...?

I'm in a troupe that has six members, but we usually have five members at class at the moment. We drill FCBD moves and improv in chorus with formations of twos and threes. We really want to be able to improv as a five as well and are experiencing the obvious difficulties with sight lines when we do.

Can anyone suggest ways for us to work as a formation of five more effectively? Anyone got any creative ideas for performance also in terms of making the best of a group of five?

My Arabic shimmy is hopelessly uneven and uninteresting. Problem one: the shimmy. I can't keep it going on the right hip when I step right and forwards. I think it's trying to figure out how to keep that right knee bent enough so the hip can keep moving while I step on to it, but no amount of mental preparation seems to help. Problem 2: the undulation. I like to start the undulation with a nice chest lift, but I seem incapable of of pulling off that and the stepping and the shimmying. So basically, the whole move looks like a step forwards, then do the bottom half of an undulation while shimmying. Repeat. Does anyone have any words of advice or encouragment?
